I'm sort of with Stacatto - make two necks, but make them both now. Consider using threaded inserts too.

New build; fretless piney precision!

I'd go with a fretted neck this time round. And you know Dave, I know you love jazzes, but with the frequency you build basses and the woods you like, an original shape - maybe just a jazz variant - would be cool to see...
Hawkbone, if I made necks with the intent of changing them frequently, threaded inserts would be a must.
Beej, I designed a single cut neck-thru that I'm hoping to start... sometime. it's 5-string, and if not for that I would be building it now instead of this precision, which I'm really only building because my uncle gave me a beat up old RBX-170 or something, with precision bass setup.
What kind of designs would you have in mind?
And I'm leaning more and more toward fretted, simply because I haven't done a fretted bass yet - only the three telecaster guitars that I built have been fretted... never been fond of the speedbumps.

Truss rods recieved and in. Fingerboard glued on earlier, hopefully will be at least slotted tonight, if not shaped...
I love all of your projects! I cant wait to see this one finished, however it seems as though in most of your threads you never close up with some final shots or soundclips. It would be cool if you did some group shots soundclips of your basses to share the piney goodness!
Well, at the end of this bass, I'll take a group picture of my first build, this one, the last unlined-fretless-jazz, a telecaster I built for one of my teachers, a telecaster for some kid, and the double neck I'm working on.
Those are the only builds I have left.

Neck actually turned out really good, if I do say so myself.

I glued on the headstock ears, and I'll cut the headstock and glue on the back veneer tonight.
All that remains to do is the body's clearcoating, and installing the tuners.
I've slotted for frets, but should I fret it or just fill the slots?

Check out my rough fret end shaping - I always manage to nick the corner of the fretboard.

there are upper frets? what for?
But really, the last 4 frets are on the fingerboard overhang, and were kind of spur of the moment. this being my first fretted bass, I figured I'd go to 21 frets and leave the overhang bare, but it looked funny so I figured I'd do some "half frets", or whatever you'd call that. I kinda' like it.

since these pictures were posted (this morning, in other words), I leveled the frets, did a finer sanding on the body, installed finishing nail side dots, and a string retainer.
Did the basic setup - it plays and sounds great (if I do say so myself), even though I'm not really a fan of fretted basses.
gets a nice low action with old chrome flats, a real fat, classic sound.
