New Classic Stingrays

Like Fender RWs, I viewed the Classic SRays with much skepticism when I first heard about them. And yet I really do like them better than their "contemporary" siblings after playing them several different times, through the same rigs, at the local Guitar Center. Even though I like the back-spaced neck pickup on my Rics, I don't dig the neck H in the HH SRays so much.

I don't think they are worth the price they are asking for but they are still great.

IMHO The pre-eb and classic stingrays are voiced differently but I like the Pre-EB better but the classic wasn't that bad at all.

OT:I think its because most of the guys who bought the new classics are the guys that wanna try something new and have no luck finding a good tone in the standard models. I'm one of those guys and fell in love with the Classic SR5 and have fun with it for a few months then ended up selling it because I'm really a J config guy..

I was a Fender guy for many years even though I had a 1983 Ray sitting in the closet since about 1985. Last year both the J and P basses are now the 2nd pick as the SR just flat out works better for what I'm playing at the moment (rock & R&B with 2 guitars, keys, and drums).

Some of the early 80's SR's (like mine) did not have the greatest necks although the older ones are very good. Whiki has some interesting info on the history and some of it is actually true.

I've had my Classic since July and I love it. I actually want to buy one more after my Roasted Bongo comes in. The things I like about my Classic over a regular Stingray is the string through body bridge, the addition of mutes, and I love the birds eye maple necks on these things. Absolutely stunning!

I never base a bass purchase by it's new warranty....a historically good bass is a good bass. And I've had a ton of preEB MM's pass through here over the years and will say qc was not a problem, it is previous owner modifications that had to be fixed, but not qc.

I loved the special color of the pink classic I had, but man it was a typical heavy EB Ray with a typical fat EB neck same as all the Classics hanging in stores here, where preEB's are usually lighter/mid-weight basses with far slimmer and far more comfortable necks. It was a nice bass, but my preEB's still came out on top in both tone and feel.
I'm positively sure I will get another one someday, but it will have to be cherry picked in both weight and neck feel, which means I'll have to forgo any color preference.
