new combo!+questions

hey TBers!
I've bought a old roland super cube 100 that is in perfect condition and I love it:hyper:!Only i got a question, it has 2 stack jacks( pre out and main in) and the manual says i can plug in two basses, 1 trough the traditional input and one through the stack jack with use of a preamp, do i really need a preamp to plug another bass in it? Can someone explain me how that main in works and what they are used for?
IF i need it, any suggestions for one?

The main in bypasses the preamp and connects you directly to the power amp. Therefore you would need a separate preamp to make up the gain and to shape your sound.
