New Epifani Amps.......very interesting!

The Piccolo 600 has been for sale on the Bass Central website for almost 2 years
The 501 was listed as 'shipping in three weeks' about half a year ago.
I am TOTALLY unimpressed with this company at this point. I'm sure some of these amps will eventually get to market, but the whole thing leaves a very bad taste in my mouth.
Me too (for my own reasons) - I'll never buy another product from them again...

410UL is still a great sounding box. I just kind of moved away from the bit of mid scoop thing, and the Berg AE cabs totally float my boat (along with Duke's also!). That, combined with not really digging the whole company any more resulted in, for the first time in almost 15 years not having anything 'Epifani' in my stable. Pure IMO there!
A friend of mine, who works for Epifani, says the new products should begin shipping next month!
Seriously though, one of these years they will actually introduce something they show at NAMM, and maybe this is the year.

The AE's ruined me
Again, the 410UL is still a GREAT box, but LOTS of stuff has happened since that box was spec'd and designed over a decade ago.
I hope so too. He said he's been demo'ing (he's a bassist) the Piccolo amp on real gigs and he likes it a lot.
Never had a chance to try that one.. it is a bit over my weight limit. I believe Tom Bowlus compared it and found it to sit between the 410UL and AE410... not quite as big and scooped and pure as the 410UL, but not quite as tight and grindy and aggressive as the AE410. Quite frankly, that is a very nice tone profile! But, I believe it is over 70 pounds, which is a bit much for a one person schlepp up and down stairs, etc.

So that's gonna be the first thing to fall off in case you bump against it in transit or on a gig etc...
Well, probably not, but that's the first thing I thought when seeing it and reading that this is the volume pot.

Nick did have the UL 501, Piccolo 600, and Epifunky 300 all on display at the NAMM Show. They all sounded about the same (having the same preamp). Here is a video of Bobby Vega playing through the UL 501 and two DIST 4x10's:

Is the Berg AE410 as effecient as the UL410?
The Chef has me all fired up to buy a used Series 1 UL as it seems to be able to make enough racket with a Walkabout. Curious as to what other boxes are this effecient and semi-lightweight.

The UL-410 and AE410 seem to be pretty much in the same ballpark, efficiency-wise, IME.
Sensitivity is about the same, but the tone is WAY different, with the AE410 being tighter in the low end, much more low mid punchy, MUCH more aggressive in the upper mids (I often describe it as the 'Flea' cabinet, and it will give you a quite aggressive, punchy, tight, hit you in the chest sound). It is quite a bit smaller than the 410UL, but a touch heavier.
The 410UL is voiced deeper in the low bass, has a bit of a low mid dip, very smooth mids, and a large upper mid dip, which gives it its airy, smooth tone (i.e., there is quite a bit of distance between the top of the drivers and the start of the tweeter, making the tweeter sound very pure and hi fi... kind of sitting above the sound of the cab). This is why many of the gospel funk guys use this cab (which I've described in the past as the 'Marcus Miller' cab.... that big low end and very upper treble extended sizzle).
After over a decade of gigging the 410UL (I and II), I ended up greatly prefering the AE410 on the gig... punch, no boom, and lots of articulate up top.
The new AE212 kind of sits right between these two.... deeper and smoother than the AE410, but still more punchy (i.e., it has plenty of upper bass/low mid voicing) and articulate than the 410UL.
All great cabs... just depends what you want. And, assuming you get a 4ohm version of the 410UL, both will be plenty loud (and the Walkabout has enough EQ power to even out the low end of the 410UL, and also soften the aggressive upper mid attack of the AE410).
IMO and IME!
Edit: While the voicing of the Epifani heads has a lot to do with this, you can hear what I'm talking about in that clip that Tom put up.... that 60's J bass sounds like an MTD! I understand the DIST cabs have an even stronger scoop in the mids as the UL, which gives you (especially when combined with the Epi heads) that sort of 'boom and click' tone that many slappers like. Can't stand it much any more myself. Of course, the Walkabout will punch and warm the UL up quite a bit.
