New Epiphone Fretless Jack Casady Demo

I had chance to check out the new Epi fretless Jack Casady the other day and all I can say is wow! I bought a JC when they first came out and foolishly sold it, another JC has been on my want list for quite some time. I can't pick one up just yet but as soon as I can I'm going to grab one.

I definitely might be interested, but my concerns are that the bass will be wicked long and therefore hard to balance on a strap and, like my Dillion 335-004 basses, have a full length center block which will make them wicked heavy. I wanted so to love those Dillions -- they are in a way Grail basses -- but if I am to play them at all, it has to be seated.

The Epiphone Jack Casady sig bass does have a center block, but there is a gap between it and the top, except in the bridge area. I'm not sure how it translates in terms of weight.

8 lbs sounds pretty good to me!

Nice demo! The Casady debuted in 1998. I had a '98 in Vintage Sunburst that I wish I had never sold. Great basses with great tone. Two things that I DON'T like about them:

1. I find the wide body width near the bridge to be uncomfortable. Especially when sitting.
2. I hate the neck-side strap button placement. But that can be rectified.

After having had many hollow/semi-hollow basses over the years, I've come to the realization that I just prefer the comfort of a "normal" electric bass body. Just my personal opinion, of course...

The ones I’ve played were very nice basses but they were definitely not light weight.

Compared to what? My other basses I play regularly are 10 lbs. or so, and my Casady feels really light in comparison.

The body size took a little getting used to. A grippy strap mostly solves the neck dive.

the JCs are great basses. I never had an issue with the weight, but they do have terrible neck dive.

Gibson needs to promote whoever has been the project leader (if there is one) is on the JC line to responsibility of overall bass strategy. They've done a great job on these in terms of availability, QC, the various custom colors, and now the fretless. If there is such a person, it's obvious to me he (or she) is the only person there with a clue about bass in the house that Les Paul built.
