New Fender Classis Model?

Since I'm thinking about buying a new P I was browsing the fender website and I ran into this;

Anybody know if these have been around for a while? Or did just miss the memo?
Tried searching for it here on tb, but I couldn't find anything.

So if it actually IS a new model(or even if I'm just late to the party), what do you guys think about it?
Will it match up against the classis 50's P bass?

Looks new to me. Don't see it on Fender's US pages. Just saw it referred to as MIJ in a TB post that popped up with google. Maybe that's the answer?

Under 'Specs' it says "Series: Japan Exclusive"

Yeah, must have looked over that yesterday in my excitement. Still, it looks like a nice alternative to the classic 50's.

I know there already is a Mexican '60's jazz, but those finishes seem pretty nice.

Just a quick question, didn't Fender Japan shut down somewhere this year?

That's what we've been told, but we still can get the blue Steve Harris P and the Aerodyne, both made in Japan. Fender Japan may be gone as a corporate entity, but there is still a little bit of manufacturing going on across the big pond, and in wake of the Trans Pacific Partnership it would make sense.

The FMIC/Kanda-Shokai joint venture was dissolved, so "Fender Japan" as we knew it no longer exists. Now FMIC handles all Fender-related works in Japan...including, but not limited to manufacturing, marketing and distribution. Therefore, models like the Aerodyne, along with other "Japan Exclusives" are still being produced. :bookworm:
