New Fender Standard P Bass

Fender is now showing a new Standard P Bass on their website. At least this is the first I have seen it there. It is made in Indonesia with a poplar body, has a plain black logo and a ceramic pickup. It comes in four different colors. Candy cola, which looks really cool, olympic white, black, and 3 color sunburst. On the 3 color sunburst and black it comes with an Indian laurel fretboard. Cost is $600. The Player II cost $800 and comes in seven colors with an alder body. The Classic Vibe 60s P Bass is also made in Indonesia, has a poplar body and and Indian laurel fretboard. In the Squier you also get an alnico 5 pickup for $450. So are the colors and maple boards worth $150 up charge? I don't know. I just think it's cool that there are so many different P Basses to choose from at different price points. I would like one with a maple board to throw in a Seymour Duncan Quarter Pound pickup. The Indian laurel fretboards in the photos look dark enough to be rosewood but who knows if that's what you'd get on a production model. What do you think of this new P Bass from Fender? Personally, I feel like those are Squiers with a Fender logo for an extra $200. Can't even get black and maple. But it's an interesting find, I hadn't seen those.

I'm sure they are made in the same plant as the Squiers. They do have them already on Sweetwater and the laurel fretboards do look almost like rosewood. Very dark not like the Squire's but yeah a black with a maple would be nice. You have to go up to the Player II series to get that combo.

Marketing wise, that's a very good idea. The Fender logo on the headstock combined with the low cost of labor of Indonesia. Many Fender's competitors are doing it, why wouldn't they ?

That will also help them capture more sales by covering the whole offering starting from the affordable entry level Squier bass up to the very high end Fender custom shop products.

I'll go check them out when the local GC gets them in stock. Mainly to compare the pickups with the Squiers they have.

Wish they would have added a Mustang to the lineup.

It's all speculation at this point. My feeling is the CVs are really good and you get a lot for your money. Personally Im skeptical you'd get the $170 in improvement.

So if I were buying now I'd just go CV. Or heck you can get a used player or GL tribute for less than 599. Until I can try one, (and more likely buy one used) I wouldn't really consider buying one.

I got the Debut Strat and it's shockingly good. I had to do a little fret touchup but other than that it's ready to rock. Sure I could swap pickups but these are decent enough for what I want (basement guitar.) Set up very well. I kinda prefer the satin they put on the cheaper squier necks over the CVs hi gloss. Dig the black matte too.

TB was giving me a lot of loading error msgs earlier today.

I find the TB search kinda whack, generally. I just go to google and type "talkbass [whatever I'm searching]" and get better results

The Fender logo over the Squier logo is a big deal for lots of people. Less so nowadays since Squiers are so much better now than 20 years ago. I wouldn't get hung up over the laurel board. It can easily be dyed with Feibings leather dye or oil it and let it darken up naturally. It may actually give a more percussive tone because iirc my research it's actually harder than EI rosewood.

FMIC still keep the $450 CV production line , but discontinue the 40th AV/Gold line and launch the $600 Indo Fender Std line.

I do believe there are lot ppl ( especially Asian ppl ) willing to pay S600 for new Indo Fender Std bass because the Fender decal on headstock. That is FMIC's strategy.

I willing to spend $600-700 for new indo SBMM Bongo , but not this Indo Fender.

1, All indo VM, CV and CIC CV has full bodt thickness ( even thicker ) , that is common Fender spec except the Sonic P has thinner body .

2. I do believe indo Fender has same indo CV and 40th AV neck profile.

3. What a joke, Fender 250K CTS pot...... current Vintera II and Player 1/2 has mini pot on it , don't hope FMIC use the CTS pot on indo Fender as stock pot.

I'm ngl the ceramic pickup, poplar body, and the made in Indonesia is kind of a deal breaker for me on this.

I'm not saying that any of those things make a BAD bass at all. I just think that they're probably going to get cannibalized on sales with some of the higher end Squiers on this. Why buy a fender, that's supposed to be higher end, when for a few bucks less you can get a CV or other higher end Squier? I guess I don't see the logic.
