new frettless 6 string by TBers?

hi everyone,

i am fairly new to TB and love the basses and discussions on here. so as a "gift" i am going to make a frettless 6 string bass that is designed partly by TB folk!!!

to start off i have only made 2 instruments in my life (one bass and one guitar) and i will have limited funds as i am only a teenager. but i am open to spending the money on the parts and wood to make this a great bass!

so i would like people to comment with what type of wood i should use for the body, what the body shape should be, bolt on or neck-through, neck wood, fingerboard wood, bass finish, what type of pickups, and what it should be called! so please leave a comment with what you think it should include and i will tally up the comments and see what comes out!

i think an original body shape, a dark wood of some sort. 2 jazzes and a MM humbucker, 36" scale 25"frets"

.........and maybe a whammy bar:ninja:

edit: you could ask TBers to submit drawings of body shapes and either pick one or adopt elements from a few into a new design

My wood working experience is pretty basic IMO but I am very good at figureing out how to do stuff with little resources. I only have access to hand tools right now but I can get some time in at a local wood shop.


Also if anyone has ideas for the body drawn up please post them!

I'd like to see a bass where comfort and ergonomics are the overriding design concerns: lower horn long enough for stable, prolonged seated playing (so many basses have short lower horns, presumably for looks, because they really make seated playing less comfortable), headstock no larger than needed for tuners to be mounted, body thickness 1 3/4" or more with a non-rounded bottom edge (where it contacts the thigh when seated), sufficient body width at the waist for good positioning without needing a footstool (again, for while seated).

here are some pictures of my guitar and bass that i made.
i did not make the necks but ordered those online but the body's are both pine and i made them myself.

haha yeah i went for the most tonal possibilities i could think of at the time! it consists of 4 pick ups wired in series which then go through either 1 or 2 preamps or just go out passively. also i can turn on and off each pickup!
