New guy..wanted to say hello

I've been here since Saturday but I too have been lurking for a while. I played the drums forever. Last February I picked up my first bass and found a teacher locally who I can't say enough good things about. In the course of the last little over a year I've managed to purchase 7 basses total (some would say I need an intervention, I choose to ignore those people).

I'm selective in what i have bought. They were purchased because I love the look and sound but also because I really do enjoy the hunt and the find. I only buy what catches my eye, or something I've heard and love the sound.

Anyway just wanted to say hello. I look forward to the advice and am enjoying reading the banter so far :)

Hi Rick-

Welcome to the Party! I mean that in multiple definitions, since in addition to having the good taste in choosing to join TalkBass it seems as though you already have a head-start on the phenomenon known as Bass Hoarding Disease! I say this because I am also a proud practitioner who is quickly running out of space for my 30-plus (and growing!) collection.

TalkBass is an invaluable resource for every facet of this wonderful addiction! Before ANY purchase I spend hours and hours pouring over every thread here on that particular model, which usually results in me being even more confident in my choice and an extremely well-informed buyer. I am convinced that you just cannot get that volume of information anywhere else!

I will leave it to others to wax enthusiastically on the hundreds of other benefits to being a member, and just say again: Welcome and enjoy the ride!;)

Welcome @Cafiveoh.
If you've lurked here for a while, most of TB's uh,...........eccentricities are obvious.
Here's a few more truisms to take to heart.
1. Develop thick skin, and not just on your fingertips.
2. GAS is not to be ignored, maligned, or treated with antacids.
3. Tube amps are a gateway drug.
4. Take all references to tort, flats, P's and Carrots with a grain of salt.

Seven basses?
I'd call that extreme...except I probably bought seven basses the year I started playing, too.
As for buying based on looks, hey, I won't even give a bass a second glance if it doesn't catch my eye. Plenty of good-sounding great-looking basses these days that I don't have to go the SOSO route.
Welcome to Talkbass, where every new bass is the "Best bass I've ever owned!"
