Hello all! The name's Chris. I am just another dude who listens to a lot of music and thought of something insane!

I want to learn how to play Bass... but before i put out the money for it, i want to know if it's right for me. A lot of people tell me, "oh well your fingers might be too short," or other weird poop like that.

So what I am getting at is, what "prerequisites" might one need to truly enjoy the Bass guitar?

i catch myself diggin the bass lines a crapload more than i do the lead guitar and stuff. For a while i was actually interested in drums and i noticed that i dont like hearing the foreground of a song, im more into the small things that make it great.

without the sound of the bass guitar a song sounds like uber crap to me. I pay attention to the bass guitar and just really love listening to it.

Your fingers being short don't matter, I have damn small hands, and I can play faster than a bunch of my friends who use picks (guitar OR bass). Prerequisites would probably be having the dedication to learn it. It's not going to be like you pick it up and within a day you've mastered your favourite groove. 32 months into my bass career, and I still feel tiny in the shadows of some people who aren't even hailed as the 'greatest'. Another would be having a family/whatever who don't mind loud noise and/or vibrating floors/walls. And last would be, can you keep time. This will be extremely useful in your progression.

Yep, you could be a latent bass player. Go for it.

Ah, don't worry about what people tell you. Just have fun with it, it's a whole new learning experience.
I didn't even know what bass was before I started playing, (well... I did, but still..) but as soon as I picked up my dad's 5-string, a whole new world opened up.

All it takes is an appreciation for the low-end and you're in! After that, it's basically a whole lot of practice. This may sound a little jaded (I'd imagine others would agree though), but bass is really an instrument that you have to feel to play. If you feel it... it's a definite sign!

If you already zone in on the bass when you listen to music, you are already ahead of the game.

Next step...listen to the drums with the bass. The bass and drums are THE rhythm section. All the rest if fluff.

You really won't know until you pick up a bass and try to play it. It's a different beast than guitar, but since you are already more in tune with the bass, you may find it comes easy to you.

Go find a cheap setup and just play.
