new head unit?

Hello, I am not a bass player but I am trying to do a little bit of research. The bass player in our band has only been playin for about a year and a half and he plays a Peavey Firebass 700 head through a 4 ohm Avatar 2x12 neo cab, which we intend to add a 4x10 later. Recently the head started having problems and cutting on and off really bad and our local music store told us that it would cost more than the amp was worth to fix it. Can anyone suggest an amp of similar volume that would work good for us? I have also seen some people use a pre amp and power amp?

How old is the head? Is the Peavey under warranty? What exactly is the problem causing the amp to cut out? Did your local music store tech explain why it would not be cost effective to fix the amp. Did you get a second opinion?

No, we bought the head used and have gotten a good use out of it so far. He said that maybe a solder has come undone somewhere inside the amp. It works fine but starts cutting out at loud volumes.
