new here need some help!

hey yall,

my names nick and ive been playing guitar for 4 years.

the reason im here on the bass forum is that tonight my youth leader/worship team leader came up to me and asked if i wanted to be in a band that he was starting up sometime this spring.. i was like YEAH MAN sounds awesome.

then he told me that he was playing guitar and another one of the worship team members was also playing guitar. im not upset about this because they have been playing way longer than me.

anyway i didnt realize this until he told me but he asked if I would play bass.

so i would like to know a good trusty bass that can go gigging and an amp that can do the same.. play small shows such as coffee shops and bars and the such..

i would definately like to pay under 500 and under 400 would be awesome.. thats just for the bass

i dont mind used gear either!

thanks yall!
-nick

How much for the amp?
Can you borrow any equipment until you see if the band works out?
I wouldn't spend the $$ for a one off deal that didnt' work out.

Check out Craigslist in your area for used equipment. Fender Jazz is one way to go.

lets see.. i'd like to spend around 600 total for a set up.. less if possible.

and i do believe i could borrow equipment. thats definately a good idea.

and the guy that said we were startin a band told me to look at the fender jazz.. and i am a fender man

You can pick up Fender JAZZ Bass Squier set for around $300.
This includes an instructional video, gig bag, bass and 15 watt amp for practicing.

I started off with a Fender P-bass Squier and I'm doing great now, I just wish I would have gotten a jazz.

Good luck with the band!

Example of a nice Jbass for sale:
MIM Fender Jazz with case (says brand new) black/tort $275

Whatever you buy, be sure and get a setup done on it by a pro.

Welcome on the dark side ...
Squier jazzbass Vintage modified seems to match perfectly with your needs. For amp, if you want to gig, think about a 200 watts amp. Sufficient for little gigs and reharsals. (150 would be my mini, but 200 is better). Find a combo, with 2x10 or 1x15 speaker, matter of taste...

Used peaveys, both amps and basses can be had very inexpensively. You can frequently find used combo115's for under $300, and old Peavey Foundations can be found in the same price range. Together you have a Jazz style bass(2 passive pickups) and a high power combo that should fit your needs, and falls within your price range.
