I have a new Fender Jaco Artist fretless due to arrive in the next few days. I normally tweak the neck relief and file the nut to suit if necessary when I acquire a bass, and am competent in doing this. However, I have no experience with a fretless and am seeking some basic advice please. I have done the research and the consensus seems to be that neck relief should be flat. Is there a figure for string clearance at the nut that I can use to set it? I understand about "mwah" versus fret buzz etc. but am very wary of cutting the slot too low - with frets as a guideline it is a simple job, fretless I am far less sure. I do have the correct nut files etc.
Mind you, the bass may arrive with a perfect setup that suits me - not my normal experience though. Any thoughts/advice much appreciated guy, and in case you had not noticed I am in New Zealand and had to order the bass in sight unseen although this has never been a problem for me in the past with Fender gear.
