If you want to get away from bright and clanky then you should get split coils. Tons of options there. I like DiMarzio Area J and Model J. Aguilar makes splits as well.
Hmmmm..... this is a very good point, I actually thought the sound of the Aguilar hum cancelling pickups was very nice, with some awesome "compressed crunch" if I can call it that in the mids, from a couple clips I've heard. Hmmmm.... I really appreciate all these responses!
I am a big fan of Fralins but I can’t say I have tried the other ones. Fralins really have everything I need in pickups.
I started with some model J’s, tried the Area J’s, and then the ultra J’s. I wish i’d have tried the ultra j’s first.
They are humbuckers but they really sound good in my little MIM. The Model j’s are even more boom for the buck, i use the bass with them in it when i really want to bring the thunder.
All that said, i’ve got a highway one and my brother loves to use it for recording. I use my old J Plus when i play for him but when he’s doing scratch tracks or recording a bass track for me to learn he uses the Highway One.
I’ve tried all 3 as well. I always use hum cancelling pickups, and Dimarzio gives you a choice of flavors in J pickups. First bass I had with a model J (and P) in it was in 1982. Liked ‘em ever since. I have an area J in my fretless in the bridge position - works great there. I didn’t like the Ultra Jazzes, though - too much string pull on light gauge strings for my liking. Good we both found what we like.
You won't find much on the internet about them but I have a set of Peter Florance Voodoo pickups in my J Bass. My luthier used him quite often in his guitar builds so I took his recommendation and have never been happier with my sound.
I had the same complaint with my '62 RI jazz, way too clanky even when I turned the tone know to 0, I tried a 0.47 cap in first which was an improvement, I then tried a 0.1 tone cap in it which was perfect, it sounds like a P bass on 0 and has lost none of the grind, the tone control is just "quicker" now if that makes any sense, has just as much treble when dimed as it ever did. I was thinking of swapping out the pickups too until I tried this. It's a LOT cheaper too, they cost like 3 bucks and if it doesn't work you can always buy some pickups.
For that “Epic” vintage J sound, the sweetness of the Kleins is unparalleled, IMHO.
Now sweetness is a word that gets me excited when applied to bass pickups....

When I first put a set of Kleins (replacing the Lindys) in a Joe Osborn, it was a revelation for me.
I just put a pair of Aero Type 1 pups in my Jazz. Punch, big tight lows, sweet subdued tops, pleasant mids. I'm digging 'em!

Seeing as how there are few examples of Klein bass pickups online I thought I would post this clip, which is actually quite well done, for reference. Very nice indeed....
Hey @40Hz, thanks for the info! Seeing as how you have basses with Klein 62 J's and Aguilar 4J 60's, how would you describe the top end of each pickup compared to the other? What I'm looking for are the pickup's with the "sweetest", most useful, unclanky treble response. It also seems like the Aguilar single coils have a nice woody bite to them....
