Yeah I had a really tough decision to make, because despite having chosen the 55-02, I still do want a Fender American Jazz Deluxe. I mean I REALLY want one. I watched a couple Fender demos, and the passive mode really sounded stale and underwhelming, which is one reason I ultimately chose the 55-02. I do know that if you get the right Fender, it kills. But I just didn't feel comfortable buying one without playing it with all that I read. Too bad the GC's around here don't carry any of the deluxes... Actually that's probably a good thing.
I haven't played the new Deluxes, but I had an American Deluxe Jazz 5 and Precision 4 (w/bridge humbucker) before getting my 44-60. The J5 was ok, but I wasn't a fan of the pickups. The P didn't really sound like a P, even with the P pickup soloed. Different, and not in a good way.
I hope they changed the preamp in the new Deluxes. The old ones weren't very musical IMO.

What are your thoughts on your Lakland in comparison to an EB Musicman? I've been thinking about adding something MM-like, and a 55-02 seems like a good move...
Hey man, actually the reason I got a Lakland was because I stopped over at My Music Store and tried out a DJ4. I loved it's construction and how the neck was really fast. It really reminded me of a Geddy Lee. However, after giving it a lot of thought, I figured I'd need something a little more versatile with actives. So I settled on the 55-02D which I ordered from Bass Central.
I don't like Musicman basses. I had thought about them and was considering purchasing one, but they didn't feel right in my hands. I think most of it boils down to the shape of the pick-ups, which may sound weird. They have kind of a slant on each side, which bothered me because I like to rest my thumb on the edge of them. Otherwise they sound fabulous and are well made basses.
I can tell you this... The 55-02D has a wider neck then I thought, but I like it because the spacing is wide enough for me to pop and pull without the other strings getting in the way. And it forces me to use proper fretting hand positioning. I'm still finding new tones on it. There are a GAZILLION sounds to explore, and I haven't even really touched the amp.
