Double Bass New MAS 18.5 Version 2

Only have experience with his passive cabs. I have an 18.5v2 on order. He is busy with his move and let me know there would be an add’l 3 week delay. But he said he got the parts cut and said he would break in the driver, which is swell. I use the first gen 1,8 with my Bergantino B|Amp (w/adjustable HPF). so my plan is to try the new and old stacked. I’m thinking in 3 weeks I’ll have good news.

AB,
We’ll, It might take longer, but Mike will get it done. He always came through for me. Just expect that there to be possible delays because of some
component shortage.

Mike didn’t say he has component shortage issues, thankfully.

I think the MAS cabs are in a league of their own as far as sound quality, projection and low bass ability vs portability. The amps and amp modules sound interesting but I think the passive cabs is what they do best. If there is ever a component shortage, I would expect it with amplification vs the cabs.

Hard to say, and hopefully not in your case. In the past every, once in, awhile it’s been as mundane as him having to find a different supplier for such simple things as the metal corner protectors on the outside of the cabinets. Once, the lightweight Okume plywood he uses for his builds just skyrocket in price over night. It took Mike some late night scrambling to find another supplier, but he prevailed. Eminence just arbitrarily decided one day to only sell their super 8” driver in lots of 50, so Mike had to move to Ciare 8’s which are incredible speakers. When this happens small adjustments have to be make, and build times get thrown off for a few days.
So here’s to smooth sailing for your order. :)

Last year my first gen powered 18 was stolen from my van after a gig (along with my pedal board, Felix and tone dexter :crying:) so I ordered the newest version from Mike.
With the chip shortages, it took him about 6 months to complete it and ship to me. And at that, it's still not quite complete.
Mine is still missing the HPF input buffer which makes it difficult to drive an instrument level signal.
I've used it on a few outdoor gigs so far but only with an external head powering the 18 in passive mode (and a Bergantino 112). together, they sound great. 18 is up on a pole mount which seems to help me get volume up fairly high without the bass feeling like it's going to take off (from feedback)

I can't fairly compare the 18 sonically with anything until its complete but it is a little heavier and larger than the original one it replaced.

It’s my understanding that Mike has outsourced building of the cabs to another vendor.

From June 2021:
“Ok--I'm looking to retire. And I suck as a businessman ( and HATE being one). So the Big E guys (Steve and Tom and cousin Tim--who's a REAL woodworker) will be taking things over. I'll still be involved in design and prototyping (which is what I love to do) and helping rebuild the website with a bunch of cool technical pages expalaining a bunch of stuff). There will be no orders taken--we will post what's in stock when it's boxed and ready to go. We will be limiting the catalog to speakers based on the Ciare 8's (MAS18.5, MAS 28.5 and Bodai 28.5) as well as the Bodai 12. The Bodai's will both have audiophile quality midrange attenuators. Since the Bodai's are crossed over much lower, the entire midrage will be adjustable. I will be doing custom shop cabs (when I feel like it). My favorite cabs are based on the Ciare 5's, but they cost as much as the 8's and go half the volume. So--they aren't viable in our regular catalog. The 45 tower is my favorite cab I've ever made. I'm selling these three cabs in the pic at a very discounted price. The only reason I'm selling that 45 tower is that the super-expensive new Ciare tweeter is way overkill for that cab. It's the best tweeter in pro-sound, but it's so efficient that I'm padding it wayyy down. I just built my own pair of 45 towers that are 3" shorter and a couple of pounds lighter with the little Ciare tweeter. The big one sounds astounding with recorded music, but the smaller ones sound fine for my needs. The tower has a the same high quality midrange attenuator.
It is 8 ohms.
The other two are 45's using the same 5's in a more conventional cab. They kill my previous 45's. All three are about the same volume as the best Super 12's, but go lower and have WAY more impact, control and authority. Ask Randy (Radbass). He has a 45 Tower and says it kills his Bodai 28.(I think that he's exaggerating )These are 4 ohms each.
All of these weigh around 40#. ( all that power and control demand bigass ceramic magnets.
In order to make money on these, I'd have to charge $1100 for the regular 45's and $1200 for the Tower. Which I think prices them out of the market. I'd be happy to make them on a custom basis in the future.
I'm selling these for $600 for the regular ones and $700 for the tower”

I was under the impression, initially, that there would be a "standard" line of cabs that the Big E guys would make and some specialty cabs that Mike would make, but I am not sure what the case is now. Stuff seems to have been in flux. I would call Mike and/or Big E directly and talk to them.

MarkA, Sounds like you know these speakers as I believe I do also. We must agree that taste is relative, so my opinion is just that. I agree with much of what you say, but…the MAS18 doesn’t even come close to the volume of a Crazy 88. As far as going deeper, the MAS will, but I adjust the HPF up on both so it really doesn’t matter to me.

I play 1/2 upright, 1/2 electric and much prefer the C88, once again, personal taste. When playing a concert, I use either two Bergantino 112’s (ceramic), or a Aguilar 115 (ceramic), topped off with a MAS 46 which sounds glorious, but that stack is only used when I don’t have to carry it!

ps: my cabs are all passive.

No arguments from me on personal taste.

Re. the relative loudness of the cabs, as I said, it's been several years since I got to play through a Crazy 8 and 88. I should be clear, too, that I did not compare them directly with any version of the MAS 18. I did get to play them side-by-side with some of the early MAS cabs, though, including a couple of 25s. At the time, using the "this is about as loud as I feel comfortable pushing this little cab" yardstick (i.e. hearing the onset of compressed lows, dynamics not feeling as easy), I felt a Crazy 8 and a MAS 25 were in the same ballpark. Subsequent experience (and Mike's own posts) led me to the following approximate math:
  • MAS 16 = MAS 25
  • MAS 18 = MAS 26 (+ a smidge, in terms of fullness)
That's for output potential, not sensitivity. Going by the specs on the Faital 8PR200, a Crazy 8 should have a sensitivity of 95 dB @ 1W/1m -- an 88, then, should be about 98 dB/W/m. That's impressive for a tiny cab (though I don't know how the sensitivity figure was derived). I don't know what the MAS 18 is, but I'm sure the Crazy 88 is more sensitive (not to mention 4 Ohms vs. 8), particularly at lower volumes (since the MAS cabs don't hit their stride, there, until the back wave makes a significant contribution).

How you HPF and EQ the cabs could also make a difference in how loud they can go, individually and relative to each other -- the MAS 8" cabs I've played seemed to benefit from a steep HPF set low (though of course one can set it to taste). If you tried to get the same, deep lows out of the 88 that you can a MAS 18, I suspect that the 88 would choke out earlier, but, high-passed as you have them, it might well be that the 88 pulls ahead in terms of max volume. I don't know.

I can say that, when I tried a MAS 18 next to my Hathor 1203 (which will beat my CMD 121P combo for max volume -- at least if real low end is involved), I didn't feel that it was all that far off in terms of max "comfortable" output (Hathor did edge it, though). Two of them (or a MAS 28) felt bigger and were definitely capable of going louder -- could hang with (and maybe edge) my MAS 46, actually (though I think this could change with how the cabs were high-passed, too).

In any case, I don't have the cabs (MAS 18, Crazy 88) in my possession, as you do, but I'd love to play them side by side sometime. Maybe I'd revise my impressions (and maybe I was too squeamish about pushing them the first time), but that's how I recall things.

I could, as always, be wrong.

Cheers! ;)

The thing about the MAS cabs compared to the Crazy 8s and other cabs is the way the MAS gives full response to notes as you go up the neck into thumb position. More so than any other cab I've used. Came to that conclusion years ago after A/Bing MAS 25 with Crazy 88 and Thunderchild.

Agreed,
I owned a Audio Kinesis TC-112 and used it pretty exclusively , until I got my first MAS 4x5. Duke LuJune’s cabinets are great for doubling, but with my
Double Bass and even the two different Lakland 55-94’s I use, Mike has been able to significantly reduce the size of the cabinet, while giving it a quicker response
and better dispersion. Of the two different powered MAS 1/8’s I own I like v1 for it’s size and weight (all Okume plywood) and v2 for it’s power ( partial Okume plywood. I never played a Crazy 8 or 8/8 because I owned Euphonic Audio VL 108’s and 208’s.

Ric, considering all of the equipment you’ve been through, what do you think—soundwise—of your original MAS 4x5 now? (I have one, as well as two original EA Wizzy 12 M-Lines and an NL-210.)

Michael,
I still have my powered MAS 4x5.5 along with my two MAS 1/8 v1 & MAS 1/8 v2. I won’t have a gig where I need it until May 24th & 25th. When I last used it in November it sounded fantastic. While the 1x8’s see more action the 4x5.5 fills the stage and room in a way no other cabinet I own does.

I should be clear that I’m not impressed with the crazy 8…just the 88. I’ve had two MAS 18’s and they were nice, the two together sounded very similar to my 88 for upright bass. When I run my electric through them, the crazy 88 had a much tighter, punchier sound. Now, in all fairness, Mike had problems fixing both my cabinets and I returned them and eventually got a full refund. I would very much love to check out the 18.5’s…and as I said in an earlier post, I love my MAS 46. Concerts, I usually switch to my Bergantino 112’s which are really tight and easy to dial in. Hope Mike finds what he’s looking for, he’s really a genius in design, but as he admits, he should leave building and marketing to the people who specialize in that.

How does the 4x5.5 compare to the 4x5?

At the time when I had both a 4x5 and 4X5.5 to compare, the 4x5.5 had fuller lows (still with great articulation) felt like it was louder at the same volume level, and wasn't any heavier or larger than the 4x5. I don't believe the 18 sound 5.5 drivers are
available any more so the last time Mike built a 4x5 cabinet he used the new Clare 5's that according to Mike, are a step up from the 18 Sound 5.5's. At any rate, Mike's doing a major move right now, so fortunately I'm set with MAS cabinets. Apparently
I'm among a significant group of MAS owners who really didn't have any major issues with his cabinets and all of mine are powered versions. If the 8.5's provide the same bump in lows and articulation that the 5.5's did in my 4x5.5. It would be a significant
gain in tone and volume. Just my take of course.

Now I just really want to know what the Clare 5's would sound like in my 4.5 cab...

Received the new 18.5 last night and stacked it with the first gen 1,8. I wanted the option to get more of that MAS sound, that resonant projection that a ported box just can’t do. Sounded very meaty but accurate and killer. Very slight visual difference between cabs. I don’t really see the Ciari driver appearing larger but the cab seems slight larger. I’d like to see the T/S parameters in these, especially the Sd value and compare with the Eminence. Interesting that the 4” fatai mid is gone. There is an L-pad inside the mouth. No critical testing yet. Just played last night in the local pub. This particular venue has lively acoustics and the 1,8 does just fine projecting meaningful bass throughout the room. But 2 cabs is double the fun. I had the tweeter in the 18.5 at full attenuation. I’ll play through it solo next time with both the Combustion 5 and the Upton ply UB. But so far so good. In these

photos, the current 18.5 is on bottom and the first gen 1,8 is on top. So this gives me a 4ohm load on my B|amp for double the power when stacked.

Based on your picture, there’s only a slight difference in the footprint of the new MAS 1x8.5 and the 1x8. In my experience with the MAS 4x5 vs the 4x5.5
the four larger drivers made a big difference in the low end response.
