Hello folks

I'm going build a new Modulus 4 string VJ
Just a real steady work horse for the spring.

I'm either going with use Nordstrand NJ4 or Big Singles.

Alder body with Audre Pre

What do you think?

Post your comments

To be honest I usually play flat 99% and kind of like that ever so slight darker character the Audre gives.

They grew on me.

Modulus has only used NJ4SV(s) so far for the hum canceling aspect.

After speaking to Carey He stated that the Single coils would bring out more of the lower mids to mids which might be a better fit for the graphite neck.

I'm thinking if that is the case would what about Big Singles?

I love Modulus VJs!

I thought the NJ4SVs were supposed to be as close to the regular single coil pickups as possible but with the hum canceling benefit. The NJ4SEs, hoever, are supposed to have more of a pronounced low mid from what I've been told. But this is based on general information and not actual playing. I did try out a set of the Big Singles in a Sadowsky once. I wasn't as wowed over as I thought I would be but it could have been placement on that particular bass. Don't get me wrong, they sounded fine, but when compared to other standard single coil pickups, not what I was looking for.

Are you going to get a wood fingerboard? I'd go for the satin finish neck unless you like the gloss of course. The satin felt much better to me.

Hey Z

Just the standard all graphite neck with a black alder body.

Here is a little info on the pickups.

NJ4SV ----------
These are a split coil hum cancelling design. This pickup is designed to have a tone as close as possible to the NJ4 single coils. They have a similar clarity and bottom and have a good clean growl with the same interactive quality that all our alnico pickups are known to have.
Includes black covers (exposed pole pieces).

NJ4SE ---------
These are a split coil hum cancelling design. They use the same had wound pattern found on our NJ4's but with a finer wire called 43 gauge enamel. The natural character of this design is to have a more pronounced lower midrange, and a slightly muted high end. This makes them exceptionally suited to fingerstryle players that are going for a solo bridge pickup sound with good 'bark' and 'heft'. They are also totally hum cancelling, and great for commonly noisy live situations.

I'm not into the muted high end aspect so that rules out the NJ4SE and there is touch of mid scope in the NJ4SV so...That does it do it for me on that guys as well (although not as much).

I play with both pickups on full %99 of the time so the single thing does not bother me...

Hmmm...Decisions :help::hiding::cool:

If you are installing an Audre pre-amp, then the muted high end characteristic of the SEs may be a mute point. You should be able to tweek the high end a bit more to your liking.

Then again, if your pickup settings are full up then I'd just go for the regular singles. With a proper shielding job, which I assume Modulus will do, the hum should be reduced enough if you chose to blend more to either pickup.

To be honest I have Big Singles in another bass and soloed they did not give any sort of hum.

In my buddies Fralin equipped jazz though is completely another story. :hiding:

I have a custom order for *3* sets of Invalid Link Removed (1 five-string set, 2 five-string sets) on order from Nordstrand Pickups via BestBassGear.com: the custom properties = EMG-sized as opposed to Bartolini as well as 5% underwound for a bit more aggressiveness in the low-mids and slightly less "thickness" overall after a few conversations with Nino V., whose had the custom winding done for several of his builds. I haven't played them, but this came after two years of considering different pickups & different pickup designs, then multiple long phone conversations with Carey, Stew & Mike at Nordstrand about what pups would go best with my playing style and desired tone, basses and body woods, and preamp (mostly fingerstyle playing and going for an aggressive "J-Bass on 'roids" tone especially in the low-end and low-mids, going into Spector ReBop DLX 4-string EX Zebrawood & 5-string fretted & fretless FM Flamed Maple over Alder with a bolt-on Neck connection that brings out a combination of "Spector" meets "Jazz Bass" tone compared to the more typical neck-thru Spectors, thus my choosing single-coil Jazz-type pups into Aguilar OBP-3SK/PP preamps that are Vol/Vol/Stacked Treble & Bass/Push-Pull Mids pot for two user-specific midrange frequencies which are useful for cutting through a mix and working with a fretless).

They should be arriving within the next 10 days or so (4-6 weeks on a custom build :help: although after waiting 2 years "4 to 6 weeks" have moved awfully quickly :smug: ) and I'll certainly be posting samples as soon as they're wired up and playable, having spoken about this "Project" on TB the entire time and haven gotten extremely positive comments regarding the concept. It took a while to find a pickup/preamp combination that would sound good and enhance the "original" aspects of the basses as opposed to going the standard "EMG pickups and preamp for a Spector" route, although ironically that's something I would like to try on a USA Bolt-On now that they're offering EMG-TW Dual/Single-Coil pickups standard and Aguilar OBP-3 preamps as an option. But my ReBops are going to be my very unique "SpetorJazzes" (both PJ @ Spector and Carey & Stew @ Nordy are very interested in what the final outcome will sound like, as to the best of their knowledge no one has used Big Singles in this manner before) and with the amount of time I put into this Project *before* placing an order as well as speaking to Owners/High-End employees as well as players of their products at both companies and getting nothing but "this should really sound like killer basses"

I suppose a very gross generalization could be that if you're someone who has played more traditional Precision or Jazz-type basses, Carey's "Traditional" line like the NJ4 Jazz single-coil shaped pickups would work very well for you. On the other hand, if you've spent time playing basses with soapbar-shaped pickups and have no problem with the more modern style, the Big Singles, Big Splits, or Dual Coils might very well be right up your alley. I'd suggest either emailing the shop or more helpfully giving the shop a call and speaking to Carey, Stew, or Mike on Tuesday after the holiday (from the site: "I am also available by phone at (909) 790-2548. But, please try to call between 2 and 5PM pacific time so I can get some work done earlier in the day. Thanks!") when you'll be able to speak to the people who invented them / make them for a living and will certainly be able to help you get the tone you're looking for. :D

Hey Ian

Thanks for the input on this.
After talking to Carey He has not heard of anyone using Big singles with graphite necks.

For that matter all He knows about is the handful of NJ4SV(s) that have been used so looks like we might be guinea pigs for him. :hiding::cool:

I use both traditional and soapbar type pickups.
I of course like both but for different reasons, hence forth I wanted o know what others thought.

I'm going to go Big singles and see how it works out.
I think its more of the sound that I'm looking for to use more of the time...:D

I tried out a passive Modulus VJ4 with the Bartolinis...and it sounded amazing. You may want to make a point of trying one with that configuration.

Hey Shoe

Yeah I hear you...I owned a passive Bart VJ about 10 years ago and own a active Bart JV now. They do sound good and have a very particular 'Bart' sound which I like in most cases.

In this case I was looking for a bit more openess tone married with the graphite neck.

Fair enough. I figured I would present the option. I dug that sound for myself, and I'm looking into getting a VJ4 with the passive Barts.

Aghh...Cool...

Yeah I have to say somehting about the low-mids of the Barts with the natural comression that they have with Graphite sounds killer to me IMHO. (I don't dig the EMGs and graphite but some do...I more tolerate with it on a fretless).

The Stock VJs come with passive Barts so You should be in luck.

I've got the barts in my VJ, but it has an ash body and is a bit more snappy. I also have the bart 2 band pre in it. It gets an amazing array of tones. I've been thinking of dropping in a Jretro. I have the Jretro on a 75 Jazz with barts and it friggin kills!

I have an alder bodied Jazz with a Status graphite neck, NJ4SEs and a J-Retro. No muted high end to my ears! The thing has zing like no other... er... thing. :p

I think I have some sound clips on my hard drive somewhere. I'll go rummage.

Nice...
Curious where you picked up the Ash VJ

Was that a NAMM special.
I had a Q in Ash once but traded it for another VJ.
If you have ash one then you have a rare bass.:hiding::cool:

Hey Bill
How goes it...

How does that bass sound with the onboard EQ set flat?

The muted high end in something that Nordstrand themselves say (personally I have never heard the pickups that I'm aware off anyways).

Not that I need a ton of high end, however just hearing that it is limited in some fashion turns me off in some way.

I like a slightly aggressive sounding instrument that needs no eq-ing for most playing (if that makes sense).
