New MXR pedals

Andrew, I haven't seen one yet in Toronto. Last year when I wanted the BFD as soon as it came out, I had to order one from the States. I think L&M took at least six months to get them in stock. Not sure if it'll be the same for these releases.

I know it may be a bit early to start asking or thinking about, but I'm wondering what the next pedal MXR might release in the bass series next year, or what people would like to see next? They've covered most of the standard bass effects with the release of the last two. I can't see them doing a synth since the line is analog. Maybe an EQ with dedicated bass frequencies? How about a tremolo, or a bass phaser based on the phase 90?

I wouldn't rule out a synth entirely. Chunk Systems has the Octavius Squeezer which is analog. A smaller EQ pedal might be nice since the 10 band EQ is a beast. Tremolo is such a rarely used effect on bass that I don't believe MXR would see much value in it. A bass specific phaser would be interesting since it's never been done.

I personally would like to see the Blowtorch reborn with a 12AX7 tube, a more usable distortion tone, internal mid switch, and variable high and low pass filters in place of the clean blend to determine how much of your highs and lows are affected by the distortion. So let's hear it for the Blowtorch +!

Now you're talking.

For the Toronto GTA TB'ers, I just checked with Long & McQuade and they have nothing in their systems at all yet, so it does not seem arrival is imminent ... I think I got my MXR Bass Compressor at the Burlington location about 2 or 3 months after it was first available in the U.S. though.

I was extremely happy with my MXR Black Label Chorus, but the addition of the Flanger to the Bass Deluxe was enough for me open my wallet . I really hope the flanger delivers.

I ordered the Bass Deluxe last night from The Mad Ape since they had the lowest shipping cost - $4.95 for standard delivery to Canada - and I got a "has been shipped" message at 1pm today. I'll repost once I get it and update what the custom charges were. I was charged customs on a bass once, but I don't recall paying customs on past cross-border pedal purchases.

I concur with scottfeldstein ... you're on to something here! Hopefully MXR delivers and you get the first one for free :)

Happy new year, folks!

I have been an active reader but a rare contributor to the talkbass world. I feel the need to change that right about now. Seeing the new line-up from MXR kickstarted this mindset so I'd like to share my interpretation of a useful pedalboard for my purposes which target some rock and alternative goodness. And suffice it to say, I am slightly biased towards MXR material ;)

I play a US Fender Jazz 4 String, with a Hipshot Bass-Xtender for those Drop-D songs. Before I delved into effects, it was straight into a Korg Pitchblack and then into a Hughes&Kettner Basskick. When the opportunity came up, I went for a trade-up to an SWR Workingman's 15 (seriously, got the SWR in pristine condition for exactly what I got for the imho crappy H&K). Great Decision! I subsequently wanted to build up some more sounds that are difficult to produce with fingers and amp alone.

First off, the MXR Bass DI+ - what a great box! The EQ and Color put you in a great spot in the mix and the bandmates don't suffer from an apocalyptic shock. The distortion is widely configurable and lets you retain your low end with the blend knob.

Thereafter, for some playtime fun, the Bass Envelope and Bass Compressor joined the club. I only play fingerstyle, so the compressor lets me play faster rock lines (intended for picks) without breaking my fingers and the envelope is sweet for adding some funk.

Since the Brace Audio wireless was one of the first systems to adequately address bass frequencies over the air (analog wireless never managed to address the spectrum of basses), I could instantly put that little guy on the pedalboard as well. Before, I had been using it for fiddle in a country band. Suffice to say, I don't play there anymore ;) Unfortunately, Brace disappeared shortly after I got it - great units, perfect to avoid frequency legislation issues (at least here in Europe) and darn easy to use. You might be able to find one here and there, but their website has been offline for a while.

Attached is a picture of my pedalboard, which admittedly is a little smaller than 254 stringer's setup :smug:
