New Neck for P-bass

Been thinking about going the Fender route, but I have yet to track down a 2010+ MIA Standard Jazz Neck in Maple. Anyone want to swap for a 2010 Maple MIA Precision Neck? PM me if you do.

Otherwise, I think I'm leaning towards the Birdseye/Ebony choice, but then again...

And already thought about the Status, but not buying oversees with the exchange rate of the dollar these days.

I bought three of them on eBay from this seller, all of them where brand new never played (parted basses)

I'd personally see if you can get a COMPLETELY ebony neck...that'd be kinda cool - otherwise just an ebony board would be ok. I've got a black P with ebony board...white pickguard, but I like it.

Thanks, went from the stock pickups to some Dimarzio Split P's and immediately switched to Fralin's which I liked for a while and then finally the Delanos which was based on my experience with them on my Modulus FU4 and Fender American Deluxe Jazz. BTW they sound absolutely amazing paired with the John East P-Retro.

I'd personally see if you can get a COMPLETELY ebony neck...that'd be kinda cool - otherwise just an ebony board would be ok. I've got a black P with ebony board...white pickguard, but I like it.

Perhaps, but I don't think such a beast exists, at least on the Warmoth site, and I could see it being extremely cost prohibitive and tough to find the right blank without any red or brown streaks if it did.

I've decided to go for, drum roll please.....

There were two major deciding factors:

1. I am quite happy with the tone of my current setup with the Fender neck and want to preserve that.

2. I really am a black and maple guy

Now, do I want to sell the Precision neck or keep it?

It was a tough decision between those two, especially as I was considering getting smaller fret wire, but having to refinish the neck on my own was another consideration. I have done it in the past with great results, but just wasn't up for it this time around.

Any Warmoth neck has a much better quality than any Fender neck EVER made, Period!!!

Warmoth necks are consistent which fender never has been.
Warmoth fret jobs are hard to beat.
Warmoth construction is top notch.

Fender master built custom shop necks are almost to the quality of Warmoth

Fender is overated!

I think I have to agree, however it would be nice to have more options as to neck profile when you buy Warmoth, and not get dinged $60 for carbon graphite rods vs. steel, but those are not insurmountable considering the overall quality is very high. (I sold all my Fender American Deluxe's and now only use Warmoth)

You'll be very happy with the results! Mine worked out perfectly(MIA P neck onto MIA Jazz bass) and I couldn't be more pleased. I had put an Allparts maple P neck on a black MIM Jazz last year but it is too thick and needs shaved down, I wish now I had bought a Fender neck to begin with!

I'm keeping my Jazz neck just in case I ever decide to sell the bass(too bad yours wasn't rosewood I'd been tempted to trade with you!).

Interesting sidebar about my Jazz neck, the serial# is 2007, but the date on the bottom of the heel is 1/04/2008..... to make it even more intriguing, the date stamp on the butt end is 1/24/2008!!!

Wow. Everything about this was it pretty much opinion.

Warmoth makes a decent product but I think their necks tend to be heavy. Unless you need fancy wood or steel frets I don't see any huge benefit to Warmoth over the Fender neck.

I've tried a couple licensed replacement necks in the past and they have been fine, but didn't feel quite "genuine." Maybe it was the slight variations in specs, but just didn't sit right in the heel pocket.

Not sure what I'll do with the Precision neck, I could just hold onto it if I ever decided to sell, but I don't think that's going to happen, the body on this bass is absolutely perfect for me in terms of weight and finish, so it's definitely a keeper.

Well, I did ask for opinions, but I do tend to agree with you. I had a Warmoth Tele headstock neck that was very heavy compared to any of my other production necks. Even with the reduced weight from the smaller headstock, it still loved to kiss the carpet.

The birdseye would have been nice aesthetically and I was leaning towards smaller frets, ala my 44-02, but in the end, preservation of the tone won out.
