Double Bass new neck

So I took my carved German shop bass with the out of alignment neck to the Quantum Bass shop in Houston yesterday. Lovely shop, by the way. They will do a neck removal and reset, with minor setup work for $400. Sounds good to me. The nice lady at the shop noted that the neck had already been grafted at the heel (it's ugly, she didn't mention that), and that the headstock had been glued back together (also really ugly). She mentioned that another option would be to replace the neck entirely, keeping the existing board, tuners, and nut. It would make for a more solid repair, and the scale length could be standardized. Of course it was pricey. $1600. Anyone have this kind of work done? She wasn't trying to pressure me into going that way, but she wanted me to be aware of the option.

I think that if you're planning on owning this instrument, or plan on selling it in the near future, the new neck would be a great option. I think that the price is a great price for a new neck. I say go for it if you have the funds to do it

If you love the bass a new neck can actually make it sound and play better.

If the current neck has dubious repairs, then replacing rather than resetting makes the most sense. Investing money in a broken neck seems unwise, unless the cost of replacement is really too much.

IIRC from your OP, the neck is the one limitation on an otherwise nice bass. The cheapo "repair" will leave you with an aligned neck that is still busted at both ends. The actual repair, though more costly in the short term, will give you a fully functioning bass with no issues.

I got my bass back today. It is really transformed. Much louder. Just better. When they pulled the original neck out I could see that the heel had been repaired with lag screws and a vast amount of wood glue. It got a new bridge, too. Very nice work by Quantum bass.
