New (old) Amp Day! Mesa basis M2000 review/ questions

Howdy!

Warning: this amp has more knobs and switches than a fighter jet so I couldn’t help but write a novel about it even after just one day of ownership. If you are brave or bored, please enjoy and if you have/had one of these I would totally be interested in how you used it or any differences in opinion vs my experiences.

Also I ordered new casters but they didn’t come yet that’s why my cab is upside down ;)

I have been posting a little about the mesa that I ordered. Now it’s home and plugged into a mesa road ready 4ohm 2x15. The basis M2000 was a mega bucks amp in the 90s and even though it is overly complicated and doesn’t get much love compared to the new Mesa or the old 400/400+ I still have fond memories of drooling on these when they were new.

I have an Ampeg SVT-vr/8x10 for my personal ultimate clean tone (and tube grit too but that’s WAY too loud) so this is a ‘lighter’ rig that will hopefully be fun and more flexible at lower volume for my current metal band.

On to my review/ initial experiences!

The amp has two preamp sides, tube and FET (solid state). It has a ton of headroom and the 625 watt power amp stage is quiet and simple with one output volume knob.

The tube side has a gain knob and a master volume. The three band eq knobs are very powerful on the tube side- if you turn them all the way down it actually mutes that area of the signal and makes the corresponding sliders on the graphic EQ useless/turned off. This becomes especially useful when blending with the SS channel as you can choose to use only select portions of the tube side.

It is easy to get a really nice sound out of the tube preamp. It has plenty of growl, a nice bottom and mids, and a sparkling high. It can go from clean with just a little tube sound to a muddy roaring overdrive with the gain and the master dimed.

The FET solid state preamp side is quieter. It is also easy to dial in a good sound that would work well in a band mix but often needs more output volume than the tube side since there is only a SS master knob and not a gain knob.

What the SS side has that the tube side doesn’t is a selectable bandwidth for the bass knob. The rotary EQ is not as powerful as on the tube side but you can pick the cutoff for your lows from below a low B to above an E and accentuate that area.

My mesa cab doesn’t seem to push the super subs as well as low mids and I like to stay out of the bass drum’s sonic territory as much as possible so I think the low high switch and frequency knob on the bass EQ selector will mostly be used in the low area of the high range. We tune to drop C so I might tweak for that area we’ll see when I get in a band mix.

Both preamp sides make good sounds by themselves and you can switch from tube to high gain tube or FET channels with the footswitch. It isn’t too hard to get a decent unity volume between them although the tube master seems to affect the amount of OD in the tube channel which can make the tube side much louder when switching back and forth. If you wanted to use each side at different times without diddling the output volume then you are limited to only so much dirt on the tube channel before it becomes much louder than the FET channel when you solo them.

One way to use the amp would be to have a smooth SS sound, a rowdier tube sound, and two variations with the footswitchable graphic EQs. This would be good in a cover band that does aerosmith then peter tosh for example.

Then there is the blend knob. You can get two good sounds and blend them together which makes a thick slightly chorused tone. You can also set the 9 band graphic EQs to come on automatically only in blend mode or when footswitched. Using the sliders you can make each channel into a strange voicing that interlocks with the other channel but still sounds good soloed with the sliders off. I was messing with doing a frown or mid heavy on one side vs a smile or heavy scooped sound on the other. The jury is still out on that idea.

I thought the FET side would be good for clean bass and clanky highs and the tube side good for a mid roar but it turns out that the voicings are much better suited to a scooped tube sound with the nasally mids put back in to the SS side for cutting punch and definition.

I was also playing with blasting the tube side with gain then putting solid state definition back in for a dirty/clean blend sound like a darkglass pedal or a dirt pedal looped through an x-blend fx loop pedal. This works pretty well but screws up the levels from side to side and needs the blend knob to be well over toward the FET side because of its quieter signal. In this mode the amp kind of loses its versatility and switching channels doesn’t get you similar amounts of volume.

I haven’t experimented with it but I suspect that using the rear mounted effects loop with crossover for a dirty patch on the SS side would give it another gain stage and dirty it up to match a mostly clean but tube colored punchy sound out of the tube side. Gotta try that for fun at home but bringing more stuff to the gig is not my goal!

That’s all I got for now. I know there are folks dragging these old toroidal power dual preamp dinosaurs around like me- how did you end up using yours?

The M-2000 is the most versatile amp ever made. I suspect it was discontinued so soon because the vast complexity of knobs, sliders, switches, and buttons confused too many players. But if you figure out how to adjust everything, you can find pretty much any amp tone possible.

Not surprisingly, the choice of cabinet will greatly affect your sound. I use either a 1x15 or 2x15 + 6 EVM cab and these are the same as Mesa Diesels, for all practical purposes.

I cover classic rock in small, live venues and I don't need to adjust my sound much between songs - I just set it and forget it.

I like to blend the tube and FET channels about 60/40, with more emphasis on lower mids for the tube channel, and more emphasis on the low for the FET channel.

The compression is fantastic on this amp. It's selectable by frequency and ratio and is blendable between channels.

Can you elaborate on how you use the compressor? I have used compressors before- I had a rack mount unit in the 90s but the controls were way different.

I have only experimented a tiny bit with these so far but they seem to act more as a limiter? I can see using them to smooth out mistaken louder honks or blubber but is it possible to squish the output in a way where the quieter sounds like maybe the thinner strings with less beefy sound or harmonic chimes are accentuated without squashing the loudness in an unmusical way?

Or said in a more practical way: How do you set up your compressors to get your sound?

^^^ The reason I like the compressor in the M-2000 so much is that it does it's job without being obvious. It does act more like a limited, but that's really what you want when playing live.

The compressor can be set by frequency but I never use it that way (some players may have a use for that but I just don't).

Set the comp for full range and leave it there. The only other setting is the ratio.
5:1 is a harder limit.
3:1 is a softer limit.
Which you choose is purelyvsubjective and usually depends on the type of music you're playing. Hard rock, punk, pop/dance, funk, and other aggressive styles might be better at a harder limiting. Country, jazz, soft rock, soul, etc. try softer limiting.

I've used many other compressors and have gotten that effect where the quieter notes are highly amplified and the entire bass sound just seems to pulse and throb. You aren't going to get that wth this. Even if you set the threshold to the most sensitive (The red light with be constantly fully lit, it still won't be squashing your sound too much.

IMO, you don't need that. If you want it, then buy a standalone compressor and run it through the fx loop.


P.S. The compressor threshold is dependent on your overall volume at the preamp output. If you happen to have your power amp all the way up and you preamp relatively low, then the compressor might not even be doing anything. Try to turn the power section way down and the preamp up so the comp has some signal to work on.

This requires some experimenting. You might have everything dialed in just the way you like it with the compressor set perfectly and then you the turn up the volume using the preamp. Now your compressor is all of a sudden much mire aggressive.

I think for sure my audience and my speaker cones will thank me for a little almost imperceptible smoothing.
 
BTW, that cab is a great match for your amp. Especially if you're playing metal.

The EV 15's are super loud in the low mids but poop out below 70 hz. Their midrange is incredible. Very rich and articulate. It will let your bass "cut through the mix".

DO NOT try to push the low end by jacking up the EQ. These speakers are old school and have relativey little excursion (xmax). If they're pushed too hard with low end they'll fart out and you'll melt the coil.

The graphic EQ on the M2000 is extremly useful. I find that a cut of a few db at 50 Hzthe will give the kick drum some extra space and then boost at 130 Hz to give your bass some meat. I also slightly cut the low mids to give the guitars and vocals and snare drum lots of room but then boost at 4 kHz to provide some definition and bite to the bass.

I use my amplifier following these settings ...
I make the back links
then ... with the volume of the transistor channel closed I adjust the tone on the tube channel .... then with the tube channel ready ... I open the volume of the transistor channel by dosing the amount of subwoofer .... (minimum treble) ) (middle minimum) (bass maximo) when I get a balanced mix between the two channels ... I control the overall volume at the output level
The rest ... compressor .equalizer turns off all

Luv the m2000. The versatility is the best part. I can do almost anything. I have it paired with a powerhouse 1200. Plenty of power.. I do have a ART SGX NIGHTBASS attached too. It is really old school but the sound is awesome... I think the m2000 is a good compromise between my set 4pro and some of the new class D stuff. I think the 20 lbs is a reasonable compromise for tube and solid state hybrid

I bought my M-basis 2000 new in the mid 1990's when living in San Diego. It's never left my house. It powers a Hartke 2.5XL on top of a Hartke 4.5 Bass Module. I absolutely love the ultimate level of control and options provided, however sometimes I crave simplicity. The M-Basis is everything but simple. It does crank and has excellent tonal qualities, but it is noisy and requires a gate IMO.

Any electronic device of this age, now over 28 years old, requires servicing. The pots and sliders are noisy and the electrolytics need to be replaced. There are certainly some resistors out of tolerance in there also. I'm going to restore mine and then sell it. It appears they are going for about $1200 in what the owners/sellers describe as clean. Hmmm. Not so fast. Mine looks like it was just unpacked. Plus, these sellers haven't done any maintenance that I can see. Mine will be 100% fresh and 100% awesome when I'm finished.

I downloaded the manual and then thought to check my "stuff I bought" file and found the original manual and sales receipt. $1499 in July 1996. 29 years old this summer. Crazy. $1499 in 1996 would be $3,000 today. What was I thinking. That was like 3-month's salary for a college graduate the wasn't using his degree. LOL
 
If the caps test good, leave them alone. In fact leave it alone unless you can identify a real problem. It’s not uncommon for techs to break these amps worse as they work on them. Many parts are no longer available, including some of the pots, switches, eq sliders, MOS FETs and the power transformer.
