I definitely has a more articulate top end and grind that isn't present on the original EB's. Imagine a hybrid of a P bass and Gibby mudbucker. Lots of bottom but there is a very P like quality to it...perhaps because of the wood used.

New Pawn Shop Mustang

I definitely has a more articulate top end and grind that isn't present on the original EB's. Imagine a hybrid of a P bass and Gibby mudbucker. Lots of bottom but there is a very P like quality to it...perhaps because of the wood used.
Just played one of these yesterday. Wasn't expecting much. Played one note and fell in love. Sounds like a bigger sounding P bass. I need one.
Not a regular here but I'm posting to encourage anyone who might be interested in what might be a really nice short-scale bass to go try one of these. I played a sunburst example through an Ampeg BA15 at GC. Smooth, I must say a pretty sweet bottom end and in abundance-- but not "muddy" to my ear, and I played an early 60's EBO for years back in the day. Solid E string, at least at low volume, all the way down and nicely balanced "voice" with the other strings-- again at least at a quick listen.
Very favorable first impression except the G string and the G string's polepiece didn't line up and at this price they certainly should. Ouch. It might tweak, or "buy another one".
I wasn't prepared to like that pickup, at all, but at least at a quick listen it sounded really good. I went looking at bridges and pickups relating to my Bronco project. Now GASsing in the nicest possible way for that Mustang (except for the misalignment problem!).

BTW, I'm a long-time Fender Jazz/Precision and G&L L1000/2000 owner/operator; looking for a short-scale to play Cumbia, etc. on and this is a short-scale that might hold its own against the big boys in an appropriate "venue".

I got one for $699 at Sam Ash. Its absolutely worth it. A great sounding and fun instrument to play. I am very happy with it.
I just got my Pawn Shop Mustang, its my very first short scale, all I can say is WOW! I really love this bass! The build is excellent quality, the factory set up was fairly decent, just some intonation adjustment. The neck is super fast. Mine did have a very slight buzz that bugged me enough to investigate the innards.
Once I was inside it I pulled all the electronics out and used sticky back copper foil and lined both the pickup cavity, and the control cavity. Then I soldered some wire between both cavities and grounded it all to the tone pot. Dead quiet now. The pots are actually not bad. They are full size, but I'm not sure what brand. They kinda looked like Alpha but had no name so I'm not real sure.
Anyway I am extremely happy with this bass. The output is loud, clean, and not at all muddy. It does have nice deep bass tone, which I love, but it has enough midrange to balance it out. I don't think I'll put flatwounds on it, I'd be afraid it would be too much low end. Maybe one day I'll try some flats just for fun. I'd buy another one of these basses in a heartbeat, and I'd recommend one to a friend.

For those that own the PS Mustang; what's the neck dive situation on these? I've read some about these and it seems like the neck dive is either a big problem or non-existent so I'm just trying to get some more input/ opinions on that factor... Thanks for any and all help!
As with all things, it's somewhere in between. I rest my forearm on the bass and use a 3" suede back strap. It's really not a big deal. I've experienced much worse.

There's also an eBay seller that sells some really nice '65 reissue cases. Silver with orange interior for $189.

I have two of Kurt's 'Douglas EGC-350' cases for a strat and a tele. Good quality for $63, suitable for schlepping around in the car, just not checking on a flight (!) I'll give his 'Douglas BGC-200' a try for the 'Stang.

Tried one of these yesterday. Interesting bass. I kind of liked the 32 inch neck, but I found the pickup to bee far to bassy. It is also directly where I like to play, so I kept tapping the pickup, making annoying sounds.
It was interesting, but I would have to drop the pickup as low as it could go, and probably put in a preamp to balance out the thick sounds of the pickup.

I had ordered a set of La Bella 760FL flat-wounds, thinking I'd be disappointed with the Fender 5250XL (.040 - .095) round-wounds that ship with the bass, but not so. Not as 'noisy' as I expected from my sometimes lazy fingers...
Got a pretty good deal from GC -- 10% off for trading in two guitars, and another $75 off for the then-featured Fourth of July sale coupon. (Don't let them tell you there are no 'double discounts' - they want the sale)!
