New Precision V ?

I have one.
The B string is anything but floppy.
I find the P-Bass tone to be absolutely spot on.
As for the slap tone, I can't slap worth poop, so I cannot speak on that.
He's right about that open E versus fretted E on the B string. It is thunderous.
Makes the back of my knees sweat!
I enjoyed Ed's video and found it to be what I Have found with the P-Bass American Standard V.

Is the B hollow? Yep. In exactly the manner that all P-basses are hollow sounding.

They all have that wah-pedal-partway-backed-off honky, hollow growl to them. That's the P-bass sound! Does it have that? YES. That's what makes them sound wonderful.

Do I fricken' need one NOW? Yes. Dammit.

@#$%#%$^@$% GAS for miles.

I don't know about all Fender 5s, cause I had a MIA Dlx Jazz with nice low action. But this P5 is difficult for me to get as low as I'd like, though its functional. I don't really like shimming necks, and that's what I'd have to do to get it to play lower. Otherwise it has awesome P Bass tone and plays great. Rolled fingerboard is a big plus.

I love my new Oly White P5. I ordered mine sight unseen without ever playing one in person. The only thing I was worried about was the B string and when I received the bass, my worries were long forgotten. The B string sounds surprisingly good and the feel is spot on comparable to my two 35in scale Laklands. In the past I haven't been very impressed with Fender 5's but whatever they're doing now, it works. Buy one, you won't regret it. I recently had one of my basses PLEK'd and now there's no turning back. I'm PLEKing all of my basses and the P5 is at the shop right now. I should get it back this week, I can't wait. The action was good before, but now it will be unbelievable.

I have waited since 1995 for this bass. When Fender came out with American Standard series. I Loved the 5 string jazz bass..But wanted something more. Then the came out with the Deluxe Precision Bass 5..But once again, because the active electronics, I passed on that bass too.. A few years ago, you started to see 5 string P-basses from Mike Lull & Sadowsky,but the price point was WAAAAYYYY out of my range for a passive 5 string.
Let Me tell you, Fender made this bass better than ANY Custom Shop Bass HANDS DOWN!!!! this is the BEST bass I have ever owned PERIOD!...and I've owned alot of them.

I had the reviewed the American Standard Precision V for Bass Gear Magazine's 2nd edition.
If you always loved the Fender Precision but wished it had one more string, this bass is a dream come true. True to P tone, and a true dream to play.
I had no issue whatsoever with the B strings feel, output or tonal qualities.
Fit, finish and playability were outstanding...

The only thing I did wish for was that Fender would have sent us a set of flatwounds to try on it.

I like the concept of the bass and even thought it sounded pretty good but the B isn't great. I wouldn't say that it's an issue with the P Bass in particular, I don't think that Fender has really mastered the B String with any of their standard 5 strings (I can't speak for the signature and custom shop stuff). Still a cool bass though. I think buying it would depend on what you want out of the B string.

Yeah, I bet some TI Jazz Flats would sound good on it...I may have to try that soon. I could go for some Pino tone.
