NEW PRIMUS ALBUM!!!

I'm a big Primus/Les Claypool fan, and I LOVE this album. I don't find that it diminishes the Primus sound at all. It's been a decade since they had a studio album, so naturally they've changed a bit, but it still sounds like them. Les is on point as always, and I think it has some of Larry's best guitar work. Every one of his solos are top notch. Jay Lane never especially impressed me. Not that he's bad, I just prefer Tim Alexander. Still, he's a solid drummer and a seasoned pro and this album shows it. To those who say it sounds too much like solo Claypool, I'd challenge you to listen to Fungi and Foe start to finish and then put this album on and tell me they sound exactly the same. Conversely, listen to Sausage and then play any Primus album and note the similarity. Let's be honest, pretty much everything Claypool does is HIS project, with the exception of work he's done with other artists, like Tom Waits and Adrian Belew. Just sayin'.

I've picked up most of the Les Claypool projects and they have moments that I really dig, the new Primus album has moments but really doesn't hold my attention all the way through. I think it lacks the energy that early Primus albums had and some of the creativity. It has some bassy goodness , for sure, but is overall pretty lackluster.

I concur, but after last night, the album is a completely different beast live. See them this tour, if you get a chance. I've totally changed my mind about the new stuff, and their direction is clear when in context of the live performance. Energy is still there, just a different way.

Not sure what you're listening through, but the mix is perfectly fine. The overall production is also great, in my opinion.

This album, without a doubt, has some of Les's best vocal work.

This. If you've listened to the album on YouTube, then yes, the mix is terrible. But if you actually have the CD (or the vinyl, which is super cool) than it is quite enjoyable. Occasionally the vocals are a little low, but hey, was that was Primus was ever about?
