Double Bass New Project

So Invalid Link Removed are a few takes we did at a session in my basement studio the other day. This is the first time several of the musicians met. This is also the first time they saw much of the music. This is a new project I am putting together to showcase some of my more 'avant' writing. The funny thing is the drummer and I play in several very straight-ahead, singer-led, suit and tie, bands and he laughed because he saw this as a reaction.

While there is obviously a good amount of improvisation there is a fair amount of written stuff in the form of tone rows and cells that the guys were improvising from.

Anyway I'd love to hear your thoughts.

First off, it does come through that you and the drummer have played together. Both of you at times will def leave the pulse behind, but it is always there. Just great interaction from what I am hearing between you two.

I am far from an expert but as a listener here are my impressions.

Analgeisa - I really like this tune. You keep it simple, but it sounds great, especially on the bass end. I like how the group shifts easily from the different sections and you set them up nicely. I feel this tune is a mixed bag of styles, but the groups seems to pull it off nicely. I would say loose but in all the right ways. I like the two saxes out front for sure.

I'd love in be in the bass chair if I currently had the chops.

Ergonomic - bow + guts reminds me of PC for sure, love it. Great way to book end the tune. I dig the saxes and guitar out front w/ bass and drums holding it down. Since the guitar isn't comping at all (not all that much), it has a nice open feel for sure. Nice to hear the intersections of ideas colliding, but it works.

Holland Tunnel - Claustrophobic, stressed, and stuck in traffic in the tunnel, if that was your aim you succeeded.

Over all what is also nice is nothing feels forced or super pre-subscribed, which works out really well. I get the sense you guys would fill the late night slot at the club really well. Def have a touch of Fly and Fat Kid Wednesday (local group in the Cities) IMO. Also a touch of Ornette Coleman Quartet for sure. Let me know if you are going to move forward with it.

Thanks Matt. I appreciate your careful listening and comments.

Over the years I have the good fortune of playing in a variety of stylistic circles. My goal with this group was to get players I really enjoyed from various groups I've played with here in Chicago. Consequently I have played a good amount with all those guys but many of then met for the first time at the session. When dealing with cats with open minds sometimes magical stuff happens with situations like that. I don't know if it came across to the listener but it certainly felt like that to us.

Unfortunately this has to be a side project. I've been fortunate enough to stay super busy with a few groups that work regularly so I don't really have time to go too crazy with this but I love the outlet. My goal is to record a few more tracks and release it on Bandcamp as a download only thing. I am currently working on getting us some gigs. There are a few 'off-night' original jazz showcases in Chicago. I'll keep you posted as we record new tracks.

Thanks for the input.
