Just thought I'd throw this out there - looking for new(or new-ish) bands/artists doing music in a psychedelic rock vein, like King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard, but in particular artists that are primarily instrumental. Who should I check out?

Hmmm, primarily instrumental really paints you into a corner; that being said, what is your definition of "psychedelic"? What King Gizzard does is just one facet. If you use a broad definition, I'd suggest this trio, one of my favorite 'newish' bands that many other people here like as well. They are a type of psychedelia, but encompass a whole lot of other stuff as well and seemlessly incorporate it all into their music(and are for the most part instrumental)...

Likewise, this next band could be considered post-metal, math rock, neo-prog, neo-fusion, neo-King Crimson, whatever, but they'll still take you on a voyage...

If you ever did consider Crimson the least bit psychedelic(once again stretching the definition), continuing in a similar vein, she's got six-degrees of separation credentials(having worked with Adrian Belew)...

Getting into bands with vocals, I'd start with Temples, who harken back to '66-'68 British stuff...

Then there's JJUUJJUU for more trippy excursions...

More in the garage psych direction...

A couple of wild card suggestions...
Some may consider her post-goth, I hear a lot of the 4AD label(home of the Cocteau Twins and Dead Can Dance, both with a lot of psychedelic undercurrents in my book), and a bit of the Velvet Underground's Nico in what she does, but she's still very unique...another current fave of mine...

This may be a stretch, but don't forget that there was a lot of Indian and Middle East music influence on 60's psych, so you may want to consider checking these guys out...

Thanks guys! I will check these out. Yes, I know "psychedelic" can mean many things!
And yes, things with middle eastern, Indian, and other non-western influences and elements are right up my alley, in particular music incorporating non-western scales, microtonal stuff, etc.

Wow, just listened to a few bits of them...

Animal collective
Goon moon
Rose windows
Hella
Temples
Desert Sessions
Comets on fire

I can recommend a ton more good stoned-listening groups, but that mescaline freak out sound... wooh!

Jjuujjuu

They were the opener for a Primus and Mastadon show. They were pretty dope.

This right here. A concept album that will blow your ever lovin' mind if you dive in and give it 2 or 3 listens. It will change your life. Headphones and some smoke will help enhance things for a nice evening of having your mind blown..
