New singer

If you guys can hear his vocals fine, he's got no excuse then... Maybe he's not used to singing with a band, with music going on in the background.
Something doesn't add up though, you said yourself he was sounding better, until you heard the tape, so sounds like you guys aren't hearing the vocals as well as you should either...

Well, we have some issues with the PA for sure. Like I said, none of us really know what we're doing and our speakers are crap. Plus the room is very small. For example, when I sing, I can barely hear myself, but everybody outside the room can hear me fine. We have our mains turned backwards too, facing us. When we're playing it's hard to pay close attention to what the singer sounds like and sometimes it seems like he sounds great, but when we listen to the recording it doesn't sound as good. We're going to try screwing around with the PA tomorrow night at practice and see if that helps.

My experience is that a lot/most singers sound flat when listened to on a recording. If it sounds ok live, well, it probably will be fine for gigs. Being pitch perfect is sadly rare. I'm definately flat, but when the audience is on their third drink, their powers of discernment are long gone. I'm not advocating being second rate, but it may not be as big an issue as you seem to think. Good luck.

Well, the guitarist isn't flat when he sings.
Anyway, at practice last night we got the volume levels right and the singer definitely sounded better. He still needs to work on some stuff and there are songs that we are just going to let the guitar player keep singing, but all in all I think it's getting better. The new singer does some stuff really, really well. Last night we added "Mister Superstar" and "Sweet Dreams" by Manson and he killed em'. He does Korn very well too. He just doesn't have a "nice" voice, so the plan for the moment is to let him sing the heavier stuff and just have the guitarist keep singing the other stuff.
