Double Bass New Solo Project

Cool stuff Damon. I really dig some of the textures and moods you are getting.
The main one I listened to so far was 'Solo Double Bass 7807'. I listened pretty deeply about 10 times. The mood you get at the beginning is really cool and dark and I dig the release into the higher register stuff. It really opens the tune up. Very cathartic. I also really liked the more rhythmic pizz stuff.
I like to hear pieces, regardless of genre, that tell a story. I was having a little trouble following the 'plot' of this piece. Maybe there wasn't one. When I listen to free stuff I try to feel the flow of the tune. When I play I always think of how I am communicating with my listener.
Overall a pretty cool piece though.

I think I tend toward a narrative approach, so I also like to purposfully avoid it in favor of a direct presentation of an idea. I'd like to get even less development. For example, the latest piece, the 4 string double solo I wanted to just present the high harmonics and extreme high notes using my fingernail like a sarangi (stolen from Scodanibbio) but I could not resist turning them into multi-phonics.
Part of the idea of this page is to work this stuff out, it is part open rehearsal, part fruit of 12 or 13 years labor.

For sure, different rooms seem to "ask" for certain sounds. Especially with the harmonics and sub-harmonics.
Mainly to present a fully formed idea, even if it is minimal, also to get away from habits that lead the music to similar places.
I don't use it in place of other concepts but in addition to.
I don't write them out, so that is why self-discipline is an issue.
There are a lot of great pieces using a variety of different notation concepts, and I own a lot of those scores.
I still find improvisation a more efficient method of getting to these ideas.
In this project I do make a drawing/collage for each one sometimes before, sometimes after, but it is hard to say how it is exactly related.
It is the first piece on the mp3 player, it's a 7 string ergo solo. There is some distortion in the middle but I kept it anyway. The collage has a photo of a wall in the old city in Jerusalem, frottage of a high f string, and pages from Samuel Beckett's "Endgame" and "Joseph Beuys: Life and works".
