New spector

Here ya go pilgrim - Spector being hard pressed to sell a bass has Fender cloned itself into "we'll do anything for a buck". $3200.... gag me with a spoon.

Coda bass from Spector for Winter NAMM 2010.

Specs are as follows:

Spector Coda body shape, Spector "1962" neck shape 1.50" nut width, 1 pc. rock maple neck,
20 fret pau ferro fingerboard w/dots, tortise shell pickguard, chrome hardware, Aguilar OBP-3
preamp, Aguilar single coil pickups.

These are handcrafted in our famous NY workshop by Stuart Spector and his employees.

Finishes: Metalic Blue, Solid Black, Creme, Candy Tangerine.

List is $3199 and comes with a Spector hardshell case.

...that's just sad.
No offense to J players, but seriously, nobody's REINVENTING the J bass. It's coming down to paying for whose name is on the headstock.
:scowl: disappointing.

+1,000,000!!!

Aren't there enough companies out there that have thrown their logos on Jazz Bass headstocks?! Seriously! Why don't these companies, like Spector had always done until now, create something original and unique...not riding coat tails?!

...and now Spector joins the herd. A dark time in the bass industry, indeed. :scowl::scowl::scowl:

Because J basses sell. Spector tried diffferent shapes and ideas and well, they aren't catalogued anymore are they?

Remember when the soda companies were trying to invent new sodas in the late 80's and early 90's? OK soda. Clear soda etc?....:spit:

They quickly learned the money was in the classic products. So they just reinvented what already worked. Their "new" sodas were simply a twist on the old stuff: Cherry Coke, Vanillia coke etc. Same thing with basses. Unfortunately. At least we're not guitar players where it's pretty much only Strats and Les Pauls.;)

I have no interest in a Spector J bass. But I see why they're doing it.

Well, it's a handcrafted USA Jazz bass that will probably street for about $2000 new. It's a decent deal overall when you consider what other luthiers are charging for comparable basses, and it does fill a small gap in that Spector is a recognizable name putting together this product at about $1000 less than comparable names, but amost $1000 more than a mass produced USA Jazz.

I'm a little shocked that Spector is putting out a Jazz without any real twists though. I have a funny feeling these won't sell all that well, which is a shame. When I think about my favorite basses (which are my Spector Euros), they're just nice woods & brass, EMGs, and some extra TLC, but they come together with a sound I don't hear anywhere else. I wouldn't be surprised if these are great Jazzes.

I always hope for the best for Spector's ideas, but they may never escape the NS shape. The shape is so recognizable they even have different shaped headstocks -- typically the most recognizable single brand element on a bass.

I hope a serious J player checks one of these out soon and has some comparisons for us.

Handcrafted clone with an OBP3 and single coil pups for 2 grand. Yes, cant blame them for trying something new or jumping on the J bass band wagon. Ken Smith is doing the same with those KSD's. Free enterprise trial and error.
Would I even consider buying one? Nope. :scowl:

The KSD basses aren't made or sold by Ken Smith.

Yes, I know. Thats my point here. He gets a check for having his name stamped on the headstock and the quality of those KSD's are not all that. But some folks will get one bassed on name recognition and affordability.

The main difference here is that these are being built in the US Spector shop with Stu's hands on or near them. The KSDs are more like the Legend series that Spector licenses.

I think its a bit funny they're calling it "the Spector Coda body shape" in the specs ... finally turning the tables after being ripped off so hard all those years ago.

The other thing that caught my eye is Aguilar pickups!!! Is that a typo or is Aggie jumping into the pickup market?

I wonder if there will be a 5'er.
