My view is that tort only belongs on original, vintage Fender basses; and maybe properly reliced re-issue vintage ones as well.

However, to properly relic a newer bass, one has to take off the poly and refinish with nitro. Otherwise, it's too easy to spot as fake worn.

Just picked up a spitfire pg which is gorgeous! Trying to figure out which of my current basses (if either) it works better for. My wife says neither haha but figured I should asked for some TBass opinions before I shelf this for another project.
So two options for this sweet Tort guard....sonic blue over sunburst or a real yellowy yellow....pics attached

I like the yellow-ish one better. Was wondering...How did you like dealing with Spitfire? I'm considering ordering one for my vintage Jazz bass (original guard is looooong gone). I know they're quite expensive, but is it worth it? I need a really 'relic'ed up' one.

Total honesty…I'm not a fan of tort. That being said, that Spitfire guard has a kind of fiery fierceness to it that kinda works for me…go fig!

Look at it this way…isn't it nice to know something that expensive appeals to you and is proof you've got good taste?


From what I've seen, most people who don't care for tort at all have only seen lousy looking examples. And unfortunately, there's a lot of lousy looking tort guards out there.
