Just like I believe the Fender reverse Jag is aimed at T-bird fans, I'm thinking this might be aimed at EB-O or EB-3 afficianados.
I think the Special looks sweet. Maybe drop a stacked single coil in, defret and find a way to do a blend instead of just the three way switch. Absolutely love the looks!
Wow! I have been wanting a Tele style bass, and had thought about putting a Mustang neck onto a Tele body. I may need to sell off one of my shorty basses to buy this one. I would have preferred a 30" scale, but the 32" is not a complete deal breaker, I just need to find one to try out!

$499.99 is MSRP. That's about the same as most of the other CV or VM Squiers and I'd guess they will be $299.99 street.

Why would they invest a single sent into a reissue of something that never sold well?
Squier doessn't make a "51" per se, it's more of a '54 when they dropped the slab style body andintroduced more rounded body contours alonng with the belly and forearm relief ( i.e. "Comfort Cnotoured"), but your point still stands.
I repeat with other terms (my fault): because with modern technology and resources, this beautiful bass could be reissued at full functionality and at a fraction of the original cost. Reissue it not necessarily as Fender Usa, but as a Fender MIK or Squier, instead; whatever. Does it make sense now? Why should it not sell, now? Look at the Eastwood Classic 4 or Casady sales, just to say two...

The expense to develop it within the framework of the new technology may not be worth it to them...I wouldn't hold my breath.
a lot of people (hundreds of thousands!) have been asking for a telecaster based on the 68-72 non humbucking version, and while the CIJ 51 is very close, it would be cool to have "re issued reissue" of that model. Fender does this all the time on the guitar side.
