New TC BG250 or IBANEZ P3115

Trying to decide on a new combo amp, the only difference I noticed is the TC has a built in tuner plus the artist toneprint..Any suggestions?

I own the P3115. The head is not detachable. I went a little crazy and bought both the BG250 and the Ibanez and compared them. Both are good amps but I like the Ibanez better. It has a smoother sound overall where as the TC combo is more mid focused. I could see how some might like the TC better, especially rock players who need to cut through the mix. I'm not an effects guy but the TC effects seemed nice and I really liked the overdrive knob - could go from warm tubey fuzz to nasty crunch. The Ibanez is much smaller which is a plus for me. Overall volume and low end is comparable between the two.

I am interested in these two amps as i am looking for a small portable combo >200 watts with either 1x15 or 2x10 speaker and speaker ext possibility for less than £400/$600.

Is the ibanez really 300w internal and with ext?

How do they sound tone wise? I have an Ashdown Mag at the moment and like the warm deep sound that comes from it but it's too big/heavy for my liking.

what's your thoughts on these combo's or anything else with the same specs?

I'd have to go with the TC Electronics on the strength of the tuner & TonePrint effects.

Yeah tuner is a nice touch. Surprised more amps in general dont come with one instead of some the awful compression effects built in like my MAG.

Have you heard the sound of either? Other than those two should I consider anything else in that price range that is of simular spec?

I've not played through a Promethean so I can't offer one way or another there. But I am a happy BG250 owner. I've found the combo to be very versatile and more than loud enough with a variety of 5 stringers over a loud drummer and 2 guitars. 90% of the time, I load a SpectraComp in the Toneprint section and that's all I take to gigs. A combination of the SpectraComp and the tube drive is all I usually need to get what I want, especially with the footswitch. It's also great that both of those can be dialed in and out, instead of just being an on/off switch. Having an onboard tuner is heaven.

One thing, if it matters to you. The BG250 is ported, the Promethean is sealed. If you have a big preference on that, then that might be a strong factor.

I use the Promethean P3115. Its an old school sound. Quite light and loud. I cant tell you if the tone controls are shelving or not. Its been reliable, easy to carry works well in my blues/classic rock band. The input clip LED and output clip LED (the power LED is the output clip light) make it an easy amp to set-up. The aux-in works well at practice when playing mp3s for the band. All in all I would buy again.


The early P3115s came sealed. The P3115s now being shipped are rear ported.

Favorite features: The PHAT control adds that big bottom end that I like.

The Gnd lift and level switches on the DI work well.
