Thanks for the nice detailed audio demostration! Both sounds very nice! My impsession is, the Pirastro set has slightly clearer, more powerful transient/attack with bow, while the Oak has slightly more growl when pizz. But maybe the feel is different. What do you think?

How do the OAK strings performance i TP played pizz? Can you play melodies like on a steel string or is it kind of dull sounding like thick strings behave in TP played pizz? Is the OAK verk different from tempera hybrid played pizz in TP?

Yes. I received a shipment notice from tempera on January 7 and they were delivered last week (the 23rd I think).
I did receive notification from DHL at one point, saying my shipment was going to be delayed, forgot the reason
I’m assuming last week’s storm delayed a lot of shipping. There’s another Nor’easter hitting, but last I saw it’s either going to hit the southeast or the ocean.
This is all preliminary since the Oaks have only been on a week (prior = hybrids 2+ years, VERY happy).
For the first 2-3 days, I was thinking, hold on to that shipping box, I might want to sell these, I don't think these are going to work for me. They had a fairly nasal and clunky ("old timey") aspect to them that contrasted with the hybrids that I LOVE and which are rich, open, singing and articulate on my bass. But we all should know by now that when it comes to bass strings, patience is a virtue that has its rewards.
So after only a week: on my bass, Oaks are the "stronger" string of the two and by a large margin. They are louder (A LOT louder) and have a thicker, more authoritative sound in general. Notes are "broader". In spite of the thicker gauge, they seem slightly less tight than the hybrids. The tension feels balanced across the set.
The above goes for both Arco and pizz. And while I shouldn't be the one to make any comment about gut sound because I've never played on guts, I know the sound from the jazz and (older) classical recordings I grew up with. The Oaks sound is definitely more of that kind of a sound but stops short of it, I guess because they are not guts...
Anyway, I really dig them and I think I will end up loving them. The regular hybrids had not really changed in 2+ years and in fact may have gotten even better - so I have every reason to expect the same from these Oaks. All this is from somebody who LOVES the hybrids - they were the answer to my prayers really because they were the first string that truly had no compromises arco/pizz and didn't make me miss any of the other strings I've liked and used thru the years. So I didn't really NEED the Oaks. But curiosity finally got the better and I had the duckets. And I do prefer thicker strings...

I received the Oaks, they're a bit thicker and lower tension than I expected, was pleasantly surprised. I previously had Evah Gold/Slaps (full synthetic set) on for about 7 years. I'll post again in a couple weeks after they've broken in but so far so good. I was looking for something with more punch and brightness but not the growl of a steel string. I'll say right off, they're louder than the Gold/Slaps, more complex - overtones on stings and notes I haven't heard before on my bass. They feel great to play, I'm looking forward to seeing how they settle in!
I have the regular hybrids for 2 years now. Both versions are great so it was difficult to choose between the two, but I decided the OG hybrids give me more of what I want and I like how the bass responds to them too.
has anyone experienced their fingernails catching on the G, especially in thumb position? I keep my nails pretty short and have never had an issue before. I guess I'll need to really file them down to well below the pad of my fingers. The other strings are no problem, is the G especially course in the winding? I really like the strings aside from that.
I no longer have my oaks but yes, I found the G winding to be a little bit coarse compared to my regular hybrid G. Also, my fingers kept coming across something in thumb position, so I took a magnifying glass and discovered a (minuscule) fragment of metal sticking up. I filed it off with a nail file. I didn’t find the slightly coarse G objectionable.
That’s not why I no longer have them btw. The reg hybrids just work better for me.
thanks for confirming, I guess I'll inspect closer to see if there's any burrs, it does seem to be more grabby in G thumb to C area - not sure this is going to work for me.
here's a short of my transcription of Bag's Groove - i'm not a pro but still might be valuable for how the strings sound. Recorded with an Apogee Mic+ straight into GarageBand with mild compression and low cut, no EQ or mastering filters.
