New to P-Basses! Considering a different pickup...

The whole point of a P bass is low heavy mids which punch out into the room, start adding bass and your into a whole world of hurt. I play a CV 70's P too (great bass btw) and with old dead flats on stock PU's its a punch machine.

UPDATE.

I was about to do some recording with my P, and then I noticed that it didn't have Rotosound strings on there.

So I took the old strings off, gave it a polish and some TLC and made sure it was fighting fit and gave it a bash with some new strings (and my preferred strings)

I recorded a few riffs (badly) just as proof of concept.

Here it is clean:


Here it is with some dirt


And here it is with a big muff.


I'm just using plugins for these. My setup is:
P-Bass -> Heritage Audio 1073\Black Lion Audio 1176

Two amps are running simultaneously. An Ampeg SVT3Pro for a "clean" head which is always on, and a tubey Ampeg V4R for "vibe" and dirt.

For the OD, I ran a Tech21 VT Bass pedal into the V4R, and I was running the Muff (Wren and Cuff Ram's Head) into the V4R. The SVT3 always stays clean. Stole the idea from Adam Jones

Uh...frankly I think that sounds pretty goddamn nuts. I'm now not entirely convinced I need that new pickup.

Those CV P-Basses are seriously awesome. I might file off some fret edges, but for 700 AUD? That's pretty goddamn awesome.

Sounds fine to me, sonically and playing-wise! Also, a big shout-out to all who suggested a string change for your first solution!
