New to pedals

I mean, I've seen it all over the place in the pics posted here and I'd like to understand myself why some folks put it smack in the middle of the chain.

First in chain makes the most sense for easy tuning without switching off every other pedal, esp during a performance... but I heard people argue for last in chain too, apparently some like their kill switch at the end in case anything on the path fails and makes horrible noises. I don't think it's a very strong argument, optimizing for a rare failure case, but still...
