I've found more answers than I even knew I had questions reading through these posts so I'm hoping I can get a little advice on a decision that I need to make soon.
I have an Ampeg SVT3-Pro that for a few years I have been playing on a '74(ish) Fender Bassman 2x15. The Ampeg replaced a Pignose B-100v that was heaven until it went pop and I wasn't able to revive it. I was moderately satisfied for a while, though I always felt the sound was a bit muddy.
Then I upgraded from my Washburn to a Fender American Deluxe Jazz-V. I put a Boss LMB-3 in line and have tweaked all I can think to, but I just can't get the sound I want. It does warm just fine, a big improvement from the Washburn, but this bass and I assume this amp should be capable of pulling off a lot of different sounds. When I try for a more clear sound it brightens up but sounds awful. It's like all or nothing.
My questions are:
1)Should I be using an actual compressor or modify the sound some other way (not much experience with effects)?
2)Between hi-pass, lo-pass, brite, tone knobs, tube gain, and a 9-band EQ, should I be leaving parts alone and focusing on others, or is it just a matter of slowly tweaking everything as I've been doing?
3)God help me, am I just expecting too much from the Bassman?
Tax return is coming up and I have to decide if I'll be putting a big chunk towards an Ampeg cab.
