new walkabout or a 400+?

Between the two, I'd probably choose the WA. Not because the 400+ is bad, but because the WalkAbout is good.

The 400+ isn't heavy, but it certainly isn't light either. I feel Mesa tube bass amps seem to be cleaner and more refined (quite different from their guitar amps), and I prefer the more raw and gainy sound of the SVT and Traynor YBA's, so it doesn't fully offer me what I want from my tube amps. That said, it's probably the most versatile out of all the tube amps I've tried and has its merits.

On the other hand, the WalkAbout has a warmth and tubey tone that I've never heard from any other hybrids that I've tried. It's a stellar amp, and it's also small and light! It more than satisfies what I want out of a lightweight hybrid (but it's still not class D though).

Just out of curiosity, are there any Australian amp makers? Would've thought it'd make sense to have a locally made product that can provide competitive products at good prices, that's pretty much how Marshall started. $2000 for a 400+ is too much.

Yeah, that must be the United States Postal Service rate. Much lower than UPS or Fedex, but still not a small number on top of the unit's price.

That depends on what you want for it. Also to give some insight to $2000 being too much they sold for about $5000 new. Even a new korean svt is $4500 here. And im nnot so sure getting one from the us will work out much cheaper

I vote Walkabout. I just had an Ampeg SVT2 non pro & briefly had the Walkabout at the same time. I didn't think I would winthe auction with my low bid on the SVT2 that needed repair. I sold the Walkabout to fund the new tubes & rack case for the SVT. Now I've since sold the SVT2 & wish I still had the Walkabout. The tone, weight, & versatile eq tick all the boxes for me. Also capable of being used at 2ohms if needed. I now have a Peavey pro Bass 500 which has even more eq options with the frequency width control on the parametric eq, also does 2ohms & sounds great. Having said that he Peavey doesnt sound quite as tubey & warm as the Walkabout.

I would pick the one that is awesome over the one that is convenient.

Never had anybody complement me on how convenient the bass sounded.

These days your can have both ;) trust a guy that's ruined his back hauling around heavy gear. In the long run, you could pay dearly. For the types of gigs i do, I'll take light and awesome please :)
