Double Bass New waterproofing for cases?

I've treated my bag with NikWax products with good results. It's not magic, but as a Seattlite, my bag sees a lot of moisture and it does a good job. It's been a while, but I think I washed it in Tech Wash and sprayed it with TX-Direct.

I have a friend there who I always ask before I treat something weird, but they make good products.

Troy: Re the NikWax. Thumbs up on this...I found it to be very good too.

Their N. American headquarters is here in Seattle and I know a guy. I asked him after I posted this and he said TX-Direct would help, but their tent spray would work better. I don't remember which I used, but it worked pretty well. Probably time for a new coat, it's been a few years.

I use various Nikwax products on jackets and fleece and other outdoor wear. It's really wet here for most of the year it's a great set of products. Only did the bass bag once, but it worked out great.

ARISE ZOmbie thread... Arise~

Hey guys, All of these spray product recommend washing/dripdrying the case prior to application. How are you guy washing your bass cases? (I thought maybe a sponge bath or hand-held steamcleaner is the only option.)

I got about 8 cases to do, any tips/help appreciated!

good results... Scotchgard Heavy Duty Water Shield
  • I used a handheld steamcleaner for my cases (only URB case bottom really needed it)
  • Let dry.
  • Then sprayed with Scotchgard
  • Let dry +24hrs.
I used about one 10oz can for my mooridian 3/4 size upright case. Each 10oz can did about two electric cases. (best to hang your case upright—the cans don't spray well facing down i.e. to the floor)

Side note, un-prompted the first thing my pianist said on my first gig with the sprayed case was "hey, new case?" I laughed. Once sprayed, the mooridian cases look brand new—granted last time I did this was probably 6yrs ago ;) We'll see how it does thru the winter. Next time, I'm thinking of trying the Nikwax set.
