newbie basic playing with PA/festivals?

Hi there,

New at bass gear

Wondering what gear to bring to festival gigs? Im in a country/bluesy band, drummer plays with brushes, 2 vox, 1 acoustic gtr, 1 electric gtr.

I have a Mark Bass Little 3 Head and a 2x12 Markbass cab. For this scenario A, how do you recommend I hook up to the PA?

I also just bought the Invalid Link Removed effects units which includes a bunch of modeler Pre Amps. Not sure which to use and what settings.

Manual says: With its built-in XLR output, you can avoid DI boxes completely and connect the B3 directly to any mixing console to maintain a balanced, high quality signal. Its convenient Pre/Post switch can direct an effected sound to the main outputs while sending the original analog bass guitar signal directly to the XLR output without passing through an A/D converter.

Should I use the Zoom at all? Post or Pre?

Its not a must for me to use the Zoom and I have no experience with it live so I wouldnt really know how to set it and tweak it and it may even be risky to be experimenting with it at a festival at this point.

I'd take my regular rig with me.
As far as hookup goes, you may not have much of a choice, as many festival guys (in my experience, and having run SR on a few) prefer the XLR "direct out" from an amp/head as it's easiest to work with. Old school guys may shove a mic in front of your cab.
Let them worry about getting it to the PA.. that's THEIR job!

Either way you are covered if you bring your standard rig, with our without the zoom. The zoom would go ahead of your Markbass head or in it's effects loop. Should not affect how the SR guys hook you up!

PS: I'm going to be playing one of those Festival-style gigs in 2 weeks (weather permitting)... an early Sat pm set (1.5 hrs) between gigs at same club on Fri/Sat night.. I will take my usual backline with me SAt pm, and let them mic the 2x10 cab, or use the XLR out on the SVT7Pro. THEIR choice..

your rig will be fine, if he is like me, the sound guy will probably ask that you use his DI between your bass and his amp.

I also use the B3. I don't use the preamps's though. It has great synth and modulation patch specs and a couple of good distortions which I use in combination an EQ and a compressor. Frankly it has nothing that I would bring to a blues / country gig... Actually it would be there because it's on the board with my switcher and DI. I just wouldn't be turning it on...

Play around with the MonoSyn and MonoPitch and I think it's one called multiFilter. I suppose DeTune could work on a muted PBass I/V to get a different vibe. I use that one on fretless once in a while... Gotta be subtle with that though or it ends up sounding like the chorus from hell... I really like the B3 a lot.

If you use the B3 place it ahead of the amp, insert the DI ahead of the amp assuming the sound guy has one. Watch the volume on the patches as you want the color but not a large volume or bass increase when you step on the switch. If you do have and will use patches that have a large volume jump, be sure to use those first at the sound check so the sound guy can level set appropriately. Be sure he knows about the level changes as frankly you, the bass guy can break stuff in his system ... Have fun! Festival stages are a blast!

Yes....
You are probably not the first "noob" these SR guys have come across... defer to their expertise, and let them decide how best to hook up the rig you brought!
And if you don't know how to use the Zoom.. leave it at home.

"festival" usually = no time to mess with stuff = no time to get monitors really great = bring your regular amp so you can hear yourself even if there are no monitors, don't worry about the rest of it.

you might send the PA the DI out from your markbass head or you might get a DI box between your bass and your amp; if you have no idea which sounds better, leave it to the soundguy. for lots of us though, we do know which sounds better and prefer the soundguy take the signal from the amp, to get at least some of "our tone" into the PA.

Actually the U5 DI model is pretty cool. Very colored but in a nice way. Bass, b3, DI, amp cable wise. I could work with that sound guy wise if you don't push the lows too hard.
