Hey all. New guy reliving some fond memories of what seems like was another lifetime ago.
I'm a 44 year old CPA in Tennessee. I played music as a kid right through college, but as my career got going the old Rick just stayed in the case. Marriage, children, starting my own business............blah, blah, blah. Probably the same story some of you have. Playing bass and making music just became a memory.
About a month ago, I took my girlfriend to a studio and got her some recording time as a Christmas gift. She's an aspiring country music singer. Being in that studio got the blood stirring again and lately I've been pulling out my old Rickenbacker 4001 and started playing some again. The internet wasn't around back when I was playing a lot and I just knew there had to be a great place to do some research, read, and learn a thing or two. Ba-da-bing! I found this place.
I grew up on hard / metal rock. I was listening to stuff like Sabbath, VH, Maiden, UFO, etc. As I got into college, some guys I was playing with at the time turned me on to jazz and fusion and I started listening to alot of Pat Methany, Chick Corea, Dixie Dregs, Allan Holdsworth, etc. Now, I can handle and enjoy just about anything. However, I still find myself gravitating to the bands where the bass playing is strong and a very intregal part of the music.
Biggest influences and favorite bassists - Geddy Lee (Rush), Steve Harris (Iron Maiden), John Entwhistle (The Who), Mark Egan (original bassist with The Pat Methany Group), Andy West (Dixie Dregs), John Patitucci (Chick Corea's Elektric Band), and Stanley Clarke.
I've been reading here for several weeks already without posting and have already learned a lot. Looking forward to participating in TalkBass whenever I can!
