Newsted

Personally, I always thought Newsted was the better sounding bass player for them.

Or at least would have been if they brought him up in the mix a bit more so you could F-ing hear him.

^This. Newsted is a very technical player, which showed on the albums of his pre-Metallica band Flotsam and Jetsam. I recall seeing photos of Newsted rocking a BC Rich (Rich Bich, maybe?) with a Kahler trem. He was known for later introducing 6- and 12-strings to Metallica's repertoire. That dirty, distortion-laden pick sound of his F & J days did show on the EP "Garage Days Re-revisited". "AJFA"...well, we all know what a production goat-f**k that was! Somebody got really creative and posted a re-mix of AJFA, titling it "And Justice for Jason" on YouTube, which put the bass back into the album. I dunno if it had been some mixer finagling, or someone putting their own bass interpretation with the songs; I haven't researched it enough.

It's Jason's tracks turned up. His bass tracks are just turned down and EQ'd badly.

I love Newsted. I almost saw them when I was in the UK and they were too, but didn't. I'm hoping they tour near DC; I'd love to see them. Jason seems like such a cool dude.

On one of my many random Roku channels there's a live performance of Newsted from a festival in Europe. Pretty good stuff. Much better than what he was doing with Rockstar Supernova. LOL!

Metallica is a great band and I've been a fan since about '85, but they've got some real quirks that keep them from being even better. One is that Lars is a lousy drummer, the other is that it took Lars and James 20-30 years to figure out that letting the other two band members contribute makes what they do better. Its a shame it didn't happen before Jason left, but it seems like they're happy with Trujillo and Newsted is doing his own thing and seems to be doing quite well.

I like Newsted alot. He is not a "rock star", but a true bassist always improving his craft and music knowledge.
His overall band sound sounds like he is very inspired by Lemmy. Check out Snake Bite Love and you could hear Newsted or imagine him covering that song.
I saw him on a small headlining tour in NYC. A dope got on stage and ran into Jason from behind, knocked right into the crowd, bass and all. But Newsted sounded great and played a long time.

I believe "and justice for jason" was done by a guy who re-did all the bass tracks himself, and overlaid them on the original album. It's out a long time, even pre-youtube. However, once Guitar Hero: Metallica came out, many people (including myself) took the ripped stems from the game and remixed the AJFA songs with the bass turned up. A lot of these guys mix the bass way too loud, in some effort at revenge at the poopy mix jason got, but thats just as bad. I did blackened and I think i got it just right.
