So I just ordered some strings from these guys (literally five mins ago) and I don’t really know what to expect. To those of you who have ordered custom strings from them in the past, what did you think, and what should I expect?

I've been really impressed, they're the only ones who will make string sets for my Emerald X30 Bass Baritone 12. Those are acoustic, I haven't tried their electric bass strings yet.

Do you have them made with the diamond or the platinum option? I’m still not quite clear on the difference between the two, but I opted for the platinum because why not? Might as well get the premium version for my first try with this brand.

How long have you been using Newtones on that instrument for? What was on there before?

Actually, it had Newtones on it from the start, that's what Emerald put on it when it was built. There was a spare set in the case, that's how I found out they were Newtones, and ordered more. I don't know which option I got, I don't recall that...

Edit: Ah, ok, diamond vs. platinum is only for bass strings, the ones I got are under the Acoustic strings "branch". Different composition choices. I haven't tried the bass strings yet.

"The Diamond Bass strings are an excellent quality string, featuring outstanding sustain together with long life. These strings have been designed with live performance in mind.

The Platinum Bass strings have been designed specifically for studio work. A finer outer wrap cuts down squeal, whilst the core-to-wrap ratio is set to give a string with a true fundamental note, meaning less compression is required for recording."

The Platinums are my co-favorites along with TIJR...

    Depends on the bass.

To me, they sound better and last longer enough to be worth the extra expense and shipping

Being able to spec custom sets is pretty cool too...

Been using these for about a year or so cause getting truly custom gauges for long scale Dingwall in the US is a pain. I mainly get the hex core diamond sets now which I’m pretty fond of both the nickel and steel. Platinum is really cool for a smoother more vintage thing but the B string suffers imo if you’re playing a 5.

Overall I really enjoy them, I’ve had maybe one or two dud B strings in the 15 or so sets I’ve bought but usually they are great. Once they accidentally sent me untapered strings that I couldn’t use on my main bass and they made it right no questions asked. I will continue to use them for the foreseeable future.

I ordered three custom packs early this year. Tested two so far, one diamond and one platinum, all nickel-plates steel with round cores. It was the customization options that sold me, they are really impressive. In my limited experience, the difference between diamond and platinum would be barely noticeable in a busy mix, although I did enjoy the platinum's smooth texture. Also, the platinum .130 B string had weird overtones right from the start but I cannot rule out user error (I crimp before cutting, could've messed this none up). I'd buy the diamonds again.
