In my band we play a few covers, which are our own arrangements of other people songs-like when Jimi Hendrix covered All Along the Watchtower. For my own skill improvement, I will sometimes learn another bass players part note for note, which would only work in a tribute band situation.

I lack focus, so there's always a bunch of different tunes I'm trying learn at any given time. But yesterday, was working on:

Moto Fukushima - Butterfly (still working on getting this up to tempo...apparently it took him half a year so I don't feel too bad still working on this, haha)

why not its own thing? years ago, i heard a solo guy sing "i think i love you" with just conga drums. it sounded pretty cool, actually.

that's too bad. i play a few POTUS songs, but never thought of trying that one till a music channel suggested it...

I’m working on Roy Ayers music this week: Everybody Loves the Sunshine and then Running Away (via PDBass). The second is a fun challenge in 2 repeating measures. Unfortunately, I don’t know anyone to play these songs with.

I'm reading the music and committing it to memory first. I can't read this fast. However, the speed and synchronization these guys do it is admirable. Not sure if my boys can pick it up, save the drummer, of course. I may be just doing it for myself. That's ok. I learned Roundabout awhile ago just for the thrill of it, but knowing I'd never play it in a band. Just the joy of new songs.

I had this as a song when I was taking lessons in the early '90s. A lot of fun. My teacher had me play the intor on bass too. Consider that for your band as an option you might do sometimes.

I went to see my teacher's trio play at a upscale hotel resturant one night back then, and he invited me up on stage to play it with the rest of his trio. I had never played this with anyone. I was terrified, and to this day regret not givving it a go. It was early in the night, the crowd was small and friendly.
