Steelers start training camp today!
YEP!! Timmons signed too! Now all he needs to do is shake that groin injury so he can develop into the next great Steelers LB who we'll cut when he wants big money at age 31.
My uncles are heading down to camp today. They are probably already there. I'm SO jealous.

I was really excited to hear about Timmons. Word is that he's pretty much all healed up too, which is great.
Maybe I'll go to training camp one of these days if some of my buddies are up to it. I've been in past years since I've had friends attending St. Vincent, but everyone I know has graduated now. If I go, I'll try to snag someone's digital camera and snap some pics for ya, Mike.

Such a relief. This one has been in the back of my mind since after the SB. Great move by the Rooney's, actually surprises me somewhat. Now they'll probably get to work on Ben. I bet they wait another year to see how he does before they lay out the cash for him. I think that is the smart move here.

I think that the contract negotiations are about over for this preseason, but I'm sure they've held some preliminary talks about Ben. I'm not sure exactly what his contract status is. I'm with you on the "wait and see" approach with Ben - if he can rebound from last season, then my faith in him will definitely be restored.
They've got some other players who'll be free agents next year in Haggans, Starks, Kendall Simmons, and Kreider, so if anyone is going to ink a deal soon, it will probably be one of those guys. Like I said though, I think they're done negotiating for the time being.
Inking Polumalu was a good thing for the Steelers, as he is still young and has some years ahead of him. But, I wonder if he's worth that much guaranteed ($15 mil). Maybe you Pennsylvania Polkaboys have a different opinion, but I see Polumalu as a player who is great at making that highlight reel stick, but many times can be found out of position and taking himself out of a play.
But it's not like they would find a suitable replacement in the free agent market anyway, so the signing's a great move.

I agree and disagree. I think Troy definitely could use some improvement on the coverage end of things, where he often does find himself out of position. I've been critical of him regarding this in the past. On the other hand, I've seen him make a number of astonishing plays in coverage that may have only occurred because he was taking a chance and putting himself "out of position." I think once he finds the balance between being aggressive and being in sound position scheme-wise, we'll see fewer instances of him taking himself out of plays. It's also worth nothing that he suffered a litany of injuries last year, which may have stunted his development a bit.
In any case, he brings nearly unparalleled athleticism to the position, and is among the most versatile defensive players in the game. I firmly believe that without him, the Steelers would never have beaten the Colts in the playoffs a couple years back - he was outstanding in that game.
Also true - the open market value on a player like Troy would be pretty ridiculous; I imagine it would be considerably more than the extension he just worked out in-house, given the skyrocketing salary cap.
Hey....you need to keep track of your own team right now. Leave us alone. Troy is a stud, and if he said he wanted to play for the Bears, you would sell your wife to get him. You know it too!
The only time Troy is "out of position" is when he is chasing down a play from the other side of the field. Troy doesn't play in a particular "position" on the field. He plays the field and makes plays. That is what I love about Troy. You won't see him playing 15 yards off the line watching a RB grind up five yard runs all day because that area is out of his "position".
Now let me go find some highlight clips of Troy being "out of position" and getting burned. Don't wait though, I doubt I'll bring anything of substance back for your viewing pleasure. Just because I'm in the mood to talk some off-season smack......I'll probably come back with ANOTHER clip of Jerome Bettis putting the NFC Defensive Player of the Year flat on his back. You remember that? Yeah, I knew you would!

Falcons' offseason just keeps getting worse and worse.
Yeah, may I suggest another pastime for you this fall...maybe knitting or basket weaving?
You could change allegiance within the NFC South and root for an actual winner: black and red isn't that far from black and gold.
(It wouldn't have mattered, Vick wasn't going to bring the Dirty Birds to the playoffs anyhow. Consider this season a write-off, and that it will bode well for the future, your team can now go out and actually draft or pick up a REAL quarterback in the offseason, and be a decent team in the 2008 season.)
Quite honestly, I'd rather have Mike Brown. He's more of a ballhawk, makes game-changing plays, has a nose for the ball, is rarely out of position, and can still deliver a slobbernocker hit.
I'd be worried about injuries with Brown. When's the last time he played a full season? He always seems to be banged up, which is a shame - he's a quality player.
Obviously I'm biased, but I'd much rather have Troy. Now if the Steelers had Brown at FS and Troy at SS...well let's just say I would not be disappointed with that tandem.
That's the issue with Brown. Can he stay healthy?
I felt so bad for him last season when he got hurt and had to miss the Superbowl. He plays so hard week in and week out to make plays and win games, that I nearly cried along with him when the reporters asked him about what it felt like to miss it.
With Brown healthy, we have a top 5 defense and we can stop the run. Without him, the D is solid, but not consistently dominant. We felt it in the playoffs when Alexander ran on us, and when the Colts did their damage on the ground. Brown is the Bears defensive MVP in my book.
BTW, when the Steelers ran over the Bears both starting safeties were out, and it showed. Hopefully, Archuleta will be the depth that we've been desperately needing at safety.

Sick, I tell you. Two great playmakers with athletic ability with an untamable desire to win. Those two alone will win games for you.

Good news for the Bears. It's great to see quality players signing contracts with their current teams instead of trying to hit the big money in free agency.
