NGD Ashdown Porn: Rare and Unigue....for now!

This piques my interest a lot.
I've been thinking of using two amps a lot lately. My main head is an Ampeg B25B and its an awesome sounding amp. With my main band right now, it does that great thick Geezer Butler kind of tone. I'm thinking of using my Ampeg and its 115 cab for the lows and another small tube amp to handle the highs.

Do you think this would be a good candidate?

I'm kinda worried about the PRC thing. I used to own a MAG300 and one of the ones that were the next step from the MAG series. I believe both were made in PRC but they weren't tube amps. I'm not sure why I have a chinese tube amp bias. (Pun intended this time...)

I've never used two amps at the same time before so I can't provide any insight. That said, the LB is great and if you set all the tone switches in the "up" position (setting the head for a more modern sound) it would be a worthy experiment.

As far as the PRC thing is concerned, all evidence points to my head being a hand-built at Ashdown in England prototype so I can't comment on what the regular production model will be like. I can say this unit reeks quality and if Ashdown can maintain the standard with their PRC partner, they will nice.

Very cool, I found them very good to work with! They must have bought just about all that Ashdown had to sell at NAMM....either that or they are getting some of the hand-wired LB's that are being released about now.

Your right! Ashdown advised me that mine is a prototype and not a part of the Limited Edition 100. Here is what Chris from Ashdown's customer service wrote me:

Hi Ben,
Thanks for the e mail.
Yes the one your purchased from the NAMM show was of only 2 in existence. You have purchased a pre-production prototype so this is not a part of the limited edition we are offering.
I would say this is probably more important than the LTD edition as it was one of our very first LB's to show our Global market.
The unit was sold to Bass Place from memory.

Chris never indicates that it was hand-built, but, as I mentioned earlier, all the markings on the amp indicate it was.

Updates!

Got the nerve to remove the chassis from the case and peek inside. Tubes are JJ's. Here are a couple of pics.

Also, played my SBMM SB14 and VM Tele Bass through the head during the week.

Played the SB14 through both the High and Low inputs. Preferred the tone through the Low input. Still prefer my MB for the SB14. Just sounds crisper and punchier....probably a preference.

The Tele Bass sounded awesome.....talk about booty and thump....the LB and Tele combination really brings it! The tone I like the best though is my P with flats, just sings.

Up to this point, I've only used the head at home, so I can't really crank the head without raising the ire of the wife. That said, I've pushed it as much as I can at home and when you start to push the amp you get a nice warm, fuzzy, tubey break-up as the amp starts to distort.

I haven't been able to push it much more than that to see how "nasty" it will get.

Couple of quick questions, will it be loud enough to gig with at 100-200 capacity venues and DI'ed if bigger than that?
Would there be enough headroom in case it not DI'ed or DI'ed and no monitors?

There doesn't appear to be a standby switch :ninja:

Sorry for the late response, been on vacation with the family.

Gigging in a 100-200 person room by itself (no backline support).......maybe, but I doubt it. Really would depend on how loud the other members of the band play, the actual size of the room, the cabs your using and what your perception of "loud enough/enough headroom" is. DI'ed with no monitors, I think you would be fine. Any venue where you're DI'ed, I think you would be O.K.

You're right, no standby, there is a mute. However, it doesn't seem to put the power tubes in "idle." The manual says it cuts the output to the speakers.
