I suggest looking at one of the cheaper custom luthiers. Maybe DP Custom or something. For 2k, though, hmm...

The BEST thing, though, OF COURSE, is to take the trip to a nice music store. I highly suggest just NYC. You can find almost any make you can think of, and you can have a little vacationing time, too! but enough of that.. I cant imagine that there arent tons of shops in CA.

I agree that the choice should also consider what tone you're seeking.

My Modulus Quantum give a tonal range from almost piano-like purity to nice grind.

Its a beauty and was found used in mint condition for half of your price range.

Used Lakland 4-94 or Joe Osborn. If you get the Joe Osborn, throw in a J-Retro if you can afford it. Either the JO w/ retro or 4-94 will get you a great pallette of tones.

But one of things that come to mind is what you prefer in playability. If you like a more radiused (curved) fingerboard a Sadowsky metro or Skyline Darryl Jones will fit the bill nicely. If you want one a little flatter, then a 4-94 or Osborn will be great. A Lull will be even flatter. If you like small, vintage style frets, a Lakland or Fender RI make a nice choice. If you like medium frets, then a Lull or Sadowsky.

Anyway, I vote for a USA Lakland. Fabulous construction, fretwork that is second to none, quality materials, great playability, awesome tone.

Valenti? I've heard good things - and you can get some custom options and keep the ticket under $2K.

I'd look into a Valenti, or a Sadowsky.

'course, my Lakland DJ5 w/J-retro ships this week , so I'd have to recommend the DJ, or the JO as well; they are TERRIFIC basses for the $$$ and would keep you well under $2K. A used 44-94 wouldn't be a bad choice either.
