Nickel or Stainless???????

I switched to Nickel years ago, they sound more natural to me (hey, bass are found in nature, right?). They tend to feel smoother and as Bruce mentioned, sound as bright as week old SS.

As far as callouses go, I'm one of those guys with "stealth" callouses. I appear to have none yet can play for hours on end on either type of string. Probably came from years of shaving my fingertips to avoid identification by Interpol.

I've been using stainless steel strings since the DR Fat Beams came out several years ago. They're a perfect fit for for how I play. Smooth too.

Anyway, to address a point made decades ago: Only some stainless steels are harder than nickel. Some are approximately the same hardness as nickel. Depends on the amount of carbon in the steel, on the amount of chromium, silicon, sulphur, etc.

Dunlop Super Bright Stainless Steels... the only strings I use these days.

Total necro of the post but I recently switched to flatwounds and it has changed my perspective. They already seem to lose some brightness/output so I find stainless flats on my J-bass perfect, nice and thick.
