Many times we get nicknames applied to us by friends and (sometimes) parents. They can be flattering like: "Swe-eetie" or "Handsome" or "Sexy" (no offense intended) --- and these usually end up in fights in school and social outcasting/derision in later life.

Remember "A Boy Named 'Sue'"? :hiding:

It seems that all blues players have a nick that kinda describes them in ways that they like or are aptly applied to a trait or characteristic. Sometimes it's for blood and insults - but let's not go there.

Bass players need a nick too!

Samples:::
  • Blind Bat
  • Fingers
  • All -thumbs
  • Fumbles
  • etc, etc.

Think it out carefully - it could be with you for the rest of your life.

PS: Keep it SOMEWHAT politically correct OK? I got yelled at for an indigenous persons' comment once upon a time!

What's the use of a nickname if you make it up yourself? more importantly: What is the value? Having a nickname that has been bestowed upon you reflects not only on you, but on the people that gave it to you and the fact that you have friends that care enough to give you one and know you well enough to give you a fitting one. Giving yourself a nickname is kinda selfimportant and douchey.

That being said: I'll take Megatron. hehe.

The only two nicknames that will stick with me are Sheep and Bongo/Bongo Juice.

Sheep was cause of a username I'd once used and it stuck with a friend.

Bongo is nothing bass related but after Ali Bongo, the magician, just cause I have Ali in my name...and Bongo Juice came from a mix of just Bongo for the above reason and this



Other than that....I'd leave it up to others to bestow nicknames.

I had a few nicknames back in Florida. Some of my friends called me Horse. Others called me Fish. Some even called me Dumb Joe (on the count of my horrible short term memory). I have also been called Big Joe, Joe Corrone (I like Corona beer), and Shotgun Joe. Since moving to Colorado, I haven't been given a nickname. Probably because I haven't found any steady band situations. JoeVictim is a moniker a gave myself to display my disgust with the man. I have been screwed by the system on more than one occasion.

I was given the nickname "Fret" which stuck for years. Oddly enough it was the years when I wasn't really playing bass. It was originally "fret-free" because the chick who started it felt that nothing ever bothered me. She liked it because it was a play my first name is Jeff(rey), so it all made sense to her. Again, oddly enough, I only owned fretless instruments at the time too, but she didn't know that.
