Nielsenian Dystopia

Your data is a grain of sand on the beach. The thought that someone is mining the data to look at you personally is main character syndrome.

I don't care if non-sentient silicon targets me with an ad for butt-itch cream based on how some algorithm interpreted my data.

The device is listening for high frequency coded audio embedded in the programming or commercials. That code is then matched to a database to ID the content. What they don't tell you is that the high frequency audio also contains subliminal messaging. "I want a Snickers....I need to buy a Snickers..."
i don't need to subliminal messages to want a snickers

My roommate and I were a "Nielsen Family" in 1974. They offered to pay us for our daily log, kept for a week.
We were both college students. He had a girlfriend, and was hardly around. I was a music major, and also was hardly around between studying, practicing, and playing with various groups.

I was the one who filled out the diary: there was nothing all day until 11:00pm Local News
11:30pm Johnny Carson

I mailed in the diary, and a couple of weeks later they mailed me back my payment: a Quarter taped to a 3×5 note card!

Years ago, the FBI got caught listening to conversations via the OnStar that was installed in various automobiles. Remember, any speaker can become a microphone. They found what they thought was a hole in the regulations that allowed them to do this without going through a wiretap process, warrant, etc.

Now don't get me wrong, I am a huge FBI fan, knew several agents, great guys. But there are always people or organizations that will push right out to the limit of rules or laws, and that's where they were. It was banned by courts after it came to light.

But this is why I don't have 'smart' TV's or anything else where I can buy 'dumb' stuff, no onboard circuits that can easily be taken advantage of.

I think there practically is no privacy or confidentiality left for govts or large organizations can breach any walls in place. I just hope, that like the lock and deadbolt on my front door, it at least keeps the majority of shaky morals in check: A really pro, dedicated thief is going to succeed.
