Night Owl Edison > (low gain OD suggestions)

I have a Edison Night Owl coming soon that I plan to put early in the signal chain. Then Comp/Octave/Dirt/Fuzz/Modulation/Preamps.

My question is, does anyone that has an Edison have any suggestions for a low gain OD pedal that really shines with the Edison before it?

I've considered a lot of the usual suspects for this role: Saturn VI, MBD, BBBOD / Queen Beest, Barbershop, Grizzly, etc.

Any thoughts or observations greatly appreciated.

I'm using the Edison into a Queen Bee and then into an EBS FuzzMo. The queen Bee loves to be pushed by the Edison and with the FuzzMo dual volumes, I can dial in the lush OD from the Queen and add a nice fuzz on top with the other FuzzMo volume. The Queen can sound tubey as is, but the Edison gives it the push that makes for that thick foundational pillow that a tube can do. I don't have any experience with the other pedals you mentioned. I run my SD Studio Bass into the Edison and for the recording studio that seems to sound real nice.

You’re going to love that pedal! :thumbsup: I use mine on every note. Seth (the builder) lurks on here but if he has a username, I don’t know it; he is, however, super approachable and responsive on Instagram (as Night Owl Industries). He also posts excellent videos of bears :laugh:

FWIW, I go Walrus Audio Deep Six compressor -> Tech 21 NYC YYZ -> Edison, though it’s entirely possible it would make more sense in some other order (I have been meaning to ask Seth about it, haha). But I love it :cool:

You're welcome man, I've gotten sucked down a bit of a rabbit hole on distortion and fuzz this past year. I have 12 new pedals and the Queen Bee is pretty cool. One thing is, with the Edison into the Queen, I can adjust the distortion by how much I push the Queen with just the Edison volume. Working the two together can get so fat. It's so cool.......

I use my Edison as an always on special sauce combo that also includes an Ampeg OptoComp. If I want distortion I just crank the Edison more and adjust the input gain to suit.

Per Seth's suggestion, I installed an NOS Tesla EF 806S which adds even more headroom.

Not sure why but I didn't get the notification that I was tagged on this...but saw Edison and came in to read...because that pedal is amazing. I don't have mine any longer, but only because tubes compress, and for what I do and how I was using the Edison, I prefer an uncompressed (solid state) sound. However! The Edison is brilliant. I couldn't believe the magic from that little thing. There are three ways that I would suggest using it....
1) At the beginning of your signal chain as a boost. Perfect for boosting other dirt pedals.
2) At the end of your signal chain as an always on tube effect. This is how I used it most of the time.
3) In the effects send of a solid state amp as an always on tube effect. This was my favorite way to use it. Gives you an immediate tube amp vibe.

I'm sure there are other ways to use it, but these are the ones that worked for me. Such a great creation.

I also had the Tesla tube in mine. It's maybe ever so slightly darker, but it's also more even from lows to highs.

I should be getting mine today! (Assuming UPS doesn’t reschedule again), #1 of the new batch, been on hold for this one since January.

I am going to start by putting mine right before my LBA 2020, and I’ll use it to drive that. After my 2020 is an HPF and then MXR Bass preamp for some clean tone shaping and to bring the level back down to normal. Hopefully it will be that “Always-On Secret Sauce” like @2saddleslab mentions.

4. I originally bought mine to use dimed in the effects loop of a tube amp to get into power tube distortion without having to play at insane volume (Seth’s suggestion). It was still too loud for the neighbors, though, so I mostly use your option #2 with it set around unity gain. I have owned four variations of this pedal (as an early adopter), and especially liked options 2 and 4 at the same time, bwahaha!

I received mine today and was just playing around with it. This may sound like a stupid question, but does the volume dial in more tube or is it just making the same signal hotter so that it drives something else into overdrive/distortion? It seems like having the foot switch would only be useful if the volume setting matches that of your original signal, otherwise it would have to be an always on effect.

Unless you use it to boost your signal for certain parts.
